God I love these pics. I'd put you closer to $1000

New prop = $350
Rudder = $350
3-4 hrs. shop labor = $300 (Rudder and packing install, alignment check, prop install)

I feel better already. Looks like there is no need for an insurance claim. Will keep you all posted.

I'd take a close look at the glass around the rudder box.

If it took a hit hard enough to bend it back like that, there are more than likely some stress fractures in the glass/gel around that area as well.

K-dub is right on. I paid around $3k for damage just a bit worse than that 4 years ago. Be sure they check the shaft and strut alignment.

On that note, and a bit more on what I posted....

If you took a hit hard enough to the rudder, i'd be looking at the glass around the strut also......how are the skegs?
Can't see them in the pic. Question

I can turn the shaft freely by hand, which I hope means that it is unhurt. No visible cracks in the gelcoat, which I guess would mean no damage in that area?

Skegs "look" OK. Doesn't seem that they hit the obstacle.

not always the case though.
The shaft might spin freely, and appear straight to the naked eye and could still be bent slightly.

I'd have it checked out by a pro for sure.

Have any cracks in the fiberglass/gelcloat? Check closely at where the rudder meet the hull.

ouch, doesnt take much to bend a brass prop but damn that thing is messed up. not to say that i dont believe you but you should take it in to get it check out just because of the driveshaft doesnt need to look bent but if its got the slightest bend it will mess up everything in the boat, like wear parts down. We did that one time and the boat vibrated like a mofo till we changed the prop and it worked fine for the rest of the trip.

That strut and rudder is made by a company called Marine Hardware. I know becuase I've had to replace them on my boat. Just call them up and order direct. They'll just need the casting numbers from the parts.. I can't remember the guys name but he gave me a big discount off the retail price list.

Oh, and www.boarditup.com probably has that prop for $309 - 349.

did the same to my boat. snick it into forward (prop off) and watch the divet in the middle of the pin. if it doesn't move, (remains a dot not a circle) you are good. don't leave it in forward but for just a sec, the packing and rubber bushing will get too hot. hopefully that nibral prop saved the shaft. as far as the rudder goes, i took a hydraulic jack, wedged it horizontally with a board and a concrete wall, and jacked it back forward.

that is for a quick fix. i would highly recommend you take it to the shop. it actually threw off the tolerances between my motor and tranny and had to be adjusted.

UPDATE : Brought the boat to the dealer. SO far he's had a quick look. Looks like this is going to be an insurance claim. The prop, the shaft, the shaft support and the rudder all need to be replaced. They can probably be straigntened or refurbished, but I don't want to go there, for many reasons including resale value. Luckily it seems that the fiberglass and gelcoat are OK.

Subject to a more detailed evaluation, total damage including labour and tax (which is 15% in this province) will be around 3,500$-4,000$ CAN (at today's rates, it's about 3,300$ to 3,800$ US).

For those who asked, there is a huge submerged rock in one area of our lake. It is about 16" below water level. When I hit I was pulling a rider, so I was going about 22 MPH.

Willy, you can't tell if a shaft needs to be replaced just by "looking" at it. You need to check the alignment, and if you can't get it right pull it and measure again. It is possible to straighten a shaft but it usually doesn't come out perfect. I have a hard time believing your strut needs to be replaced as well. Either way, it's not $$$ out of your pocket, so why not get all new gear. That price still looks high for a little R&R of some brass parts.
