Im going out tomorrow to start working on raleys and am going to start by trying a few wakeskate raleys. Does anyone have any tips to help make this less painful. Also, is it possible to land on the skate when trying this, because i have some serious landingonthewakeskateparanoi. Thanks

You should fly way past the skate, don't worry about it. And just pull in and land feet first you'll be fine.

So, has anyone here really benefitted from this? If so, how many attempts did you do on a skate? And then how many attempts on the wakeboard before you landed a raley (after you started trying them on a skate)??

jpminter, it's helpful because you can learn how to edge hard like you need to on a raley without being afraid of the potential brutality. Laughing It's a scary trick for most people when they start, so practicing with a wakeskate you don't have a giant anchor attached to you if you happen to go flying through the air out of control.

I justed started wakeboarding this spring, and jumped on the wakeskate for the first time this last Sunday. I can't beleive I waited that long to try it, it was a blast. I don't see how it could not be helpful in learning tricks. Once I could edge the thing I was trying to go as big as possible off the wake. I am definately planning on using it to learn raleys. I would think once you can launch off the wakeskate, throw the raley, and land on the water with your feet in the proper position, you would be ready to switch back to the wakeboard. Atleast that is my plan, but I haven't been doing either very long. I did find it more difficult to edge hard to get big air, but it sure made wakeboarding seem easier after switching back. I can't wake to get back on that thing.

ontrider, oh I'm 100% sure that it is beneficial. I was just looking for a testimonial from someone that learned the raley on the wakeskate and was then able to do them on the wakeboard.

i heard its easier with a wakeboard..because the wakeboard catches the air and gets pulled back its more natural i guess you would say..but i wouldnt know for sure. If i came down bad on a raley id try to dive instead of loosing my ribs

thekpan, if you want to get technical... well not having the board on your feet decreases your polar moment of inertia (by A LOT) about the axis of rotation (the handle), therefore making it easier to do with a wakeskate.

I bought a wakeskate the other week to learn the raley and the 2 falls I had didn't feel great. You can't get as good an edge on a wakeskate as a board so you won't go as high and it'll feel differrent. I wonder if you can even get the profound snap to use as the signal to pull down. Anyway, one landing was a back smack whiplash and the other was a bell flop which knock the wind out of me. I think I will learn it on the board.

jpminter, don't forget you need to take into account the force due to air resistence on the board.

I'd venture to guess that the force due to air resistence greatly outweighs the effects on moment of intertia of board vs no board.

bobmurph, thekpan's post already implied that. Besides, having to rotate your body with the extra moment of inertia would make it tougher than with a little air resistance. Try sticking your hand out of the car window at 20mph. You can battle that air resistance at will. The force involved with it is very small. Try doing it at 60mph, then you can really feel it.

Yea bu the board has much more surface area than your hand. Also considering the weight to be muscled down. Wink

Ok fine, stick your wakeboard out the window at 20mph. My point is that at that speed, wind resistance is low.

ok well while u guys were bitching about the physics involved in the 2 different types of raleys, i went out and actually tried both. Wakeskate raleys are a brilliant idea. Wihtout the board attached to you the falls are like nothing even on my first few tries when i wasnt bringing it back in all the way. Getting my feet out and extended was no problem and the only real issue was just that im not as comfortable on my skate as i am on a board. When i got my board strapped on, the first fall was awful, landed on my toeside edge and smacked my face right on the water but after that, they were no problem. Either way is easy and id say the wieght of the board and the wind resistance of the board are both negligable considering the other forces at work.

jflo452, so you were able to land them no problem? If so, what is your ability like? What other tricks can you do? Just trying to get a feel for how far along you are compared to myself.

Yeah, open-water starts is what I was talking about. Those that have done Raley's, what's the muscle group that gets the most work-out? I'm thinking abs, pulling your lower body back down straight?

yea, they turned out to be pretty easy once i got them dialed. Aside from raleys, my other tricks are backrolls, tantrums, ts r2r, scarecrow, hs fs 3, ts fs 180, hs fs 180 and just starting to learn blind 180s

its also very stylish

Here are two pictures of my 'wakeskate - raley'.. From early in the season in very rough water.. Fall didn't hurt actually..
In the first picture you can just see the skate.

wviveen, dude, you need to be careful. Never let go of the rope that quickly. In the first pic, you can see that your arm could have so easily gone through the handle. Be careful kids.

Xanadu, When you fall going 20-25 MPH forward with a wakeboard on your feet, surface area=drag and if your binding don't come off, serious injuries to the knees can happen. Or in rufioswashbuckle's case a nice big KO!

They aren't supposed to come off but it kind of helps in terms of safety on really bad falls.

Somehow, I think it would be more beneficial to try raleys on a wakeskate than to stick your wakeboard out the window. As for the bindings, mine will come off. I tried tightening them up, but I caught an edge coming down off a method and I still have a headache from that. Plus, it really pisses you off when your head is throbbing and your feet are bleeding and you have to pull the damn board off your feet to get back in the boat (maybe I need a helment and some common sense).

You're going a lot faster than the boat when you do a raley. If you cut into the wake at 20 mph (a reasonable estimate) with a boat speed of 24,
and do some simple math, that puts you at over 31 mph, which is quite painful when you catch a toeside edge. Trust me, I tried a raley to the same results as rufioswashbuckle! Luckily, though, I was able to get over the mental block, and I've finally started doing them again.
