I've been wakeboarding for a while now. I'm getting to where I'm throwing tricks like a toeside backroll and a tantrum, but neither very well. It's not because I don't know how to do it. For one reason or another, I can't pump myself up enough to just get out there and throw a trick hard. I need some way to build my confidence on the water. When I do try the more difficult tricks I have prblems even then. I get scared just as I start my progressive cut. At this point I start hesitating and thinking about it too much and almost always screw something up. If anybody's got some advice let me know. Wink

Don't think about it. Just go out and have a fun run, then when your pumped, say f*** it and try the trick without even thinking about what could happen.

Also, it helps if you visualize yourself doing the trick first, so you can have a clear image in your head of what to do. That way you can convince yourself that you can make it on the first try, so you have less worries.

Play your favorite song as loud as you can be for you wakeboard, or a song from a wakeboard video or something. That really helps. A good song to get you pumped is Thursday "For the Workforce, Drowning." Also when you try you tantrum or backroll try to land something kind of hard right before it and then just cut out and cut strait back in so you don't think about it, it will get you in a rythem a little bit. Thats what my friend does when he skateboards like if he wants to like oli a stair set he will do like a 360 flip before he gets to it so hes not really thinking about the stair set, hes worrying about the 360 flip so when he gets there he doesn't have time to wuss out.

Try some tunes.... I don't have a tower for my boat so I just have to wait for somebody to go by with theirs cranked before I try and go big Laughing Music and pre visualization really seem to help. From what I have heard it really helps to practice on a tramp too.

ya J dogg i hear that.

basically just know what you have to do to accomplish the trick and keep only that in your mind. if you think about what might happen or you psyche yourself out your gonna crash. just know what to do then do it and stick it.

I had the same problem as you until last week where I was getting so angry at myself I just went and tried a big backroll (I can barely clear the wake) and I kinda realised that for tricks like that crashes are necessary, so I tried to incorporate that into my wake jumps, especially TS.

I agree with DTBoardin, go out and try a big, new, hard trick that you know you'll bail on. Then you will realise that crashing is necessary and not that bad, so you will be able to go and really push yourself.

Then all you have to do is get over the fear, which should be much easier if you are really motivated to. It is however, easier said then done.

4:20 (???)

I have heard that is the time of day when everybody around the world is in the happiest mood. Or it could be some code name of sorts?

I am a big fan of 4:21.

k9fxr, I have to assume you are young and shouldn't know if you don't already know...

Talk to your homies in school if they know they will tell you, or they will fill you a bunch of bull like most kids in school try to do about stuff they know nuthn' about.

Go into every trick with confidence! refuse to lose!

uuuh....yeah, that sounds like a splendid idea.

Now, THAT works - every time. It's a sad but true phenomenon. It's based on the same rule that says: If you're chilling in the boat and see another boat headed for you, with a rider behind it - that rider will try to throw one of his best tricks right next to your boat, 99% of the time.
You just push yourself harder when someone new is watching.

There is no way to grow balls, either u have it or u dont, that just how it is. If you have it u will just go for it balls out and not psych yourself out. If u have to muster up the courage every time even after the first time u have done it then u wont get anywhere, u just dont have it. some people have it and others dont. it's a mentality u are born with and u cant teach yourself to have it. If you are worried about getting hurt, then u will get hurt. right now u have to decide whether u were born with balls or not, if u are then u should never ever second guess tryign any trick ever again. If u think twice, u just dont have it, no big deal just go out and have fun. You are way more likely to get hurt if u are thinking too much which causes u to hesitate. When u have it u dont have to think u just commit and it gets u a lot further.

I actually agree with one of Wake_Turner's points. If you go into a trick worrying about getting hurt, it usually doesn't turn out very pretty. Especially Raley variations. You can not be thinking about getting hurt going in to these types of tricks, you just have to push that out of your mind and not worry about it.

I don't think it is a question of all balls and no brain like WAKE TURNER said, though it was an inspiring post wake turner!
There is a balance and it is a very fine line between balls and stupidity. Stupidity is attempting something that you KNOW you cannot possibly achieve. Attempting something which could and probably will ( If you are not really expecting to pull it off) hurt you badly, like a novice rider attempting a 360 to blind the first time he gets on a board. Balls is knowing that you could possibly pull this off, you have a 50-50 chance. That you have watched the trick performed over and over again. That you have asked anyone who can do it for advice. That you have laid in bed at night and gone over and over it in your mind so that you know mentally that you are ready and there is nothing left to do but go for it 100 percent.
Basically, if you GENUINELY believe you are ready and at a level high enough to try something, then give it a go. Most of us know our own minds and know how far we can push ourselves. Some of us are born or have genuinely developed no fear. But having no fear is a dangerous thing, and definately not an emotion you can fake.
Know yourself, pump yourself up with adrenaline, get girls on board, listen to your fave track.....be brave and give it everything.......But don't be stupid and crawl out of the water with all confidence lost and a shattered body.....

It is kind of ironic how the term 4-20 came about.

I had the biggest mental block learning a Raley. When I first tried them I came super close to landing them. The board would just slide out of under me. Then I really had soem bad falls, on the verge of knocking myself out. After a few years of mental games with myself, the way I finally got it was actually from the trampoline. From the people I talked to they said they were more difficult on the tramp. So spent many hours doing them on the trampoline. I got it down so well I could do them in one bounce, 10 in a row. Then when I went out on the water and finally did it, we had huge wake, so I knew I didn't have to worry about that. I knew I could do it on the trampoline with only about 18" of air. So instead of doing what all the books and tips say about taking a huge cut which results in a whole bunch of speed, I went out about 5 feet from the wake and did it from there. Before doing it I told myself, "I have the perfect wake, the perfect board, and best driver, today is the day that I am going to land a Raley." As they say third time is a charm. Oh and as a side note, I dedicated the trick to my grandma who was recovering from surgery at the time.
