its the ballast. you wouldnt want a wake plate anyways, well in most cases. the moomba/supra wakeplate is great, but the malibu's wedge ruins the wake. the plate on the bu's are more of a gimmic than a real wake enhancing device. i hope you arent planning on buying a new nautique, because you need to do a LOT more research before an investment like that, my friend Wink

Nautique has something called the hydro-gate on their SV-211. It acts the same as Tige's Taps system or Skiers Choice's wakeplate. Rather than making the wake bigger, it helps shape it.

It shoulsn't have a plate back there...They are all personal things as to if they work, like me, I have a wedge and love the way it shapes the wake, but on my friends GG Supra 2 if us hate it and one likes it...

are you kidding me ,the wedge is a gimmick and ruins the wake??how many Malibus properly weighted and with the wedges have you ridden??i own a Supra but know and ride on 4 different Malibus in my area ,too many time to count..we have used the wedge and laos not used it to see the difference..it makes a difference for sure and it definitly doesnt ruin the wake ..it slightly increases the size of the wake but mostly it makes the wake much harder and peakier..theres a noticable difference between using it and not using it..now maybe on the boat you were on was an older version of the wedge pre 02 before they made a newer one to better work on the Vlx with the sv23 hull which works better then the old wedghe on the diamond hull..

i understand why some would not like a harder peakier wake and chose not to use the wedge do to how they like their wake but it doesnt ruin the wake..

the only real negatives of the wedge is it makes the boat harder to turn especially in tight area liek a narrow river ,two it burns more gas do to the drag, and three they were breaking a lot last year and thats about it..

i love the wedge and it works...

Definitely no wake plate on a SAN. Perhaps she's referring to the tunable rudder or she's added an accessory to the boat....

i rode on an 01 vlx and a brand new 2004 lsv that was just purchased as a first time boats by my neighbors. that wake looks great, but the vlx wake i was on was just bad. it had the standard ballast full, and the wedge down, with 5 people in it. it was way washy with the wedge down, and it was still washy and unsupported feeling without the wedge down. i didnt like the boats wake, but thats preference, but i do know for sure that when the wedge was down, it didnt do anything noticable accept use up more gas. on the lsv, the stock ballast was full, and the wedge was down, and when we took the wedge off, the entire wake felt excactly the same, and i am a very picky rider. i know the boat wasnt weighted with any sacs, and only factory ballast, but the wake wasnt up to par with my friends mobius with the wedge down, the only other boat i have ridden behind that has a wedge and is non-malibu.

I just rode a Tige 21V Rider's Edition yesterday with the Taps system and it definately makes a huge difference. Not only did it increase the size of the wake but it made the wake more peaked and firmer. It is also pretty nice in that you can adapt the wake to the different types of riders that may be on the boat. I don't know about the SAN wedge but on the Tige with the Taps system it was pretty sweet.

thats right about the TAPS, plus you dont have just "up" and "down" settings. The best use I've found for it is to load up on weight and mess with the TAPS setting in order to actually shape the lip of the wake. Didnt know there was a 21v tho :p.

Sorry, but need to correct this for the sake of conversations.........................

I quote"....it slightly increases the size of the wake but mostly it makes the wake much harder and peakier."
"i understand why some would not like a harder peakier wake"

Just a little physical science teachers knowledge. Matter(atoms and stuff) can neither be created or destroyed, just rearranged (changed.. ie... water to gas to ice, etc,etc ...) and since water is still water when wakeboarding it cannot become "harder" than the water it is.. Plus not even sure peakier is a word, but I got the point (greater angle of water at wake). Just semantics or the bastardization of English Very Happy
Have a nice day all.

Thats both correct and incorrect. Water can only be as resistant to pressure as it gets when its just a water solution (remember, we're not riding in pure water here). Now, as we all know wakes get washy. This is due to air being mixed with the water, as it passes under the boat, through the fins, rudder, engine, or all of the above. Adjusting the angle of attack that a boat has as it passes through the water will not only change the shape of the wake, but change how the air is mixed with the water. For a visual cue, look at the propwash. So, the more aerated the water is, the "softer" it feels.

...and "peakier" is a word when you're comparing only two wakes. "More peaky" would be comparing 3 or more. Cool

#1 Dictionary.com has no listing for the word "Peakier".
#2 On the web , the only definiton for "peakier" is "slightly ill, often looking pale", which has not to do with water or shapes!
#3 Water(one gram per milliliter, depending upon temp of water) is still water, whether it is mixed with bubbles or not, and water is not any less or more "harder" in either situation, but you ramp(wake) is not solid due to air(less dense than water, 1.239 milligrams per cubic centimeter), not that the water(more dense than air) is less hard or more hard. Water, unless minerals are added( ie... salt , etc...hence the ocean) will be the same density regardless of how much air you add!
You might want to think your thoughts through and do some research before you speak.
Once again semantics.

NoOne, get off it dude.

The U.S. ski jump team uses a pool for their practices during the summer.

They start shooting air bubbles through the water before the jumper hits it to make the impact softer.

So, if a boat happened to add air bubbles to a wake through the hull design then the wake would in fact feel softer.

That is what this is about. I've personally been behind boats with "softer" and "harder" wakes.

THANK YOU KING OF THE TIGERS! this guy sounds like my biology teacher last year in 9th. she told all 6 of us wakeboarders in her class that it is physically impossible to do an air ralley, and come back into position to land. she did her own little experiment, and it failed. i went to the lake with 2 of my friends in that class, and we got video of me doing it from many angles. we ended up getting extra credit Mr. Green

what type of boat do you ride behind NoOne? i am just curious.

No, in this case, pedantics. We all know what was meant by peakier and harder.

They may not be "real" words or used in the correct context with respect to the laws of physics but give it 5 years and look in the dictionary again. Language is ever-changing and new words enter into common parlance and subsequently get added to dictionaries all the time.
