| ok im kinda upset... i always get ragged on by the guys in my town! im pretty much the only girl that wakeboards and i take it REAL seriously, and our town's really small.. im only in high school, and my rents said that i need to be sponsered by the time i graduate. But thats off topic, so here's the deal on friday's, saturday's, and sunday's the guys n me all go out on our boats and wakeboard... i've been wakeboarding for a long time now and im just as good if not better than a lot of the guys i board with! well they always seem to tell me to get off the water... and they always crash in on me if im boarding.. it's really startin to make me mad.. i dunno does anyone else get ragged on by guys that think girls cant board? |

I am the only chica out there in my area too and they all egg me on.
Actually my boyfriend and I went out together off the same boat so he could teach me while I was riding..(I'm just starting out), They all want me to be as good as them, actually they wouldn't even mind if I was better than them!!! _________________ Don't dunk the cat in the water!!!! |

I used to ride with a group of guys all the time. They weren't as bad as the ones you speak of, but I could tell that they felt like it was a waste of their time when I was riding. They eventually got to the point where they wouldn't call me to go out boarding, wouldn't answer the phone if I called, and made friends with everyone I boarded with, then took them out with them and didn't call me. It felt like they were trying to make me not able to wakeboard, and that was the most frustrating thing. I wanted to move away. It eventually got to the point where I could be having a great day on the water, they would show up, and my day just went down from there.
So what did I do? I hung in there, wakeboarding for a year with my parents and mom's tennis friends. I was the only one that rode, they would just watch. Just this year I have started finding a great group of people to board with, and I'm excited about wakeboarding again.
And those guys, they all moved away, but I still see them sometimes at contests, but I try to ignore them and not let them ruin my day. I learned a lot from my time wakeboarding with them, and now I try to pay attention to everyone I wakeboard with so that no one feels left out.
Just hand in there, search the message boards looking for other people to ride with, your love of the sport will win.
If you ever find yourself lost in the woods of south Mississippi, look me up, you are more than welcome to ride anytime.

I started riding in 96 and i was pretty old when I first tried it. so being 35 yeras old now i have to admit, i still suck...........but the coolest thing is, that none of the guys rag on me at all. they still cheer as loud as they can when i just go wake to wake. I will never thro a raley or a ront roll but I NEVER EVER get ragged on. I love the guys I ride with. _________________ If you're gonna ride my ass, pull my hair too!! |

Hey WakeBIGorgohome,
I do not even know if I should be on this Forum or not, but I was looking around and saw your post...
That is a shame that they do not respect you for riding.
I think you need to keep riding and try not to pay those pricks any attention. They are obviously threatened by you for some reason or another. They may be jealous that you are getting better than them or that you already are better than them. Do whatever you can to not board when they do...just keep getting better and show them up!
Hell, if they are harassing you on the water ...you could always get the water patrol involved. Just tell the patrol (anonymously...so you do not look like a RAT) that certain people harrass you on the water...and see if he can stand by and observe them bothering you and possibly being unsafe boaters....a nice stiff fine may keep them off your tail!
It is supposed to be a fun sport, but damn that is not kewl...
You would be welcome on my boat anytime!
Try to have a good 4th... _________________ Ride Harder...Bottom Out! |

| Hang in there! It may be a small town, but at some point you're bound to meet some people that will be supportive & encouraging about your time on the water. I've been lucky in my life - all of the men, including my husband & father, have always been incredibly supportive about this stuff. It's easy for people (including myself) to say "go find someone else to ride with". I've lived in enough small towns to know that it's not always that simple, but still, hang in there. Boarding should make it all worth it. |

I know how you feel. When I was dealing with those guys I just felt like there was no one else out wakeboarding. Everyone was skiing or tubing on our lake. One day I saw some guys out riding behind a jet ski, I went over and asked if they wanted to ride in the boat, and that was my crew for the summer. That's sorta how I got a crew up, just went out and rode, people would kinda watch, then I'd go over and ask if they wanted to ride, usually they were stoked to get to ride behind a real inboard boat and not a bass boat or jet ski. I also met some awesome people through the internet. I would invite them to come ride and made friends that way. Mom said one day I was going to invite an axe murderer to the house.
If your friends aren't supporting you then drop them like hot rocks...wakeboarding is supposed to be fun.
The invitation is always open to come to my "Killa G'Rilla" wakeboarding getaway.

I live in a very small town too, just about the size of yours. Luckily the guys I ride w/ have a lot of respect for me as a girl rider. They don't rag on me because I know way more about wakeboarding than all of them and I taught most of them how to do backrolls. I am also the one w/ the boat. My boat's down now though and its awsome because there all inviting me out on whatever they can find. There are a few people around here that do rag on me because of my obsession but I steer clear from them because they don't make it any funner. Even if you have to drive 30 mins to ride w/ a different crew, it will be worth it. Mabye you should hang out by a local shop and see who else stops in and see if they want to ride. _________________ Sliding Glass...It's what we do.

yo if one guy is being a standout and really getting your angry, just be like "easy there mr. tiny" in front of all his friends, there is no ego shatter worse then when a girl rags on a guys wang in front of his friends, i'll be damned if he opens his mouth again + all his friends will be so busy exploiting the opeanin you left on him they will leave you alone

Anyone ever see Jonny Sunami? (sp?) You have to challenge them to a contest then show em up in front of the rest of the town.
Seriously start baggin on his/their game and ask why they "are afraid of a little girl?" Or just tell em straight up to stop being dicks and that girls talk and you can keep them from ever seeing another naked boob in that town. _________________ I'm back! after 5 years |

That totally sucks. I am lucky enough that the guys I do ride with are very encouraging. Usually, they are stoked to even have a chick on the boat. One of the guys said that having a chick on the boat is cool and seeing her ride is like seeing a unicorn. I thought that was kind of flattering.
I think those guys who you used to ride with and give you a hard time are just intimadated because you can probably ride better then them. Be glad that they don't invite you out. Why would you want to hang out with people who will talk shizzle about you and not be supportive? Who knows, someday when they see your picture in Wakeboarding magazine or your section in a video, you WILL have the last laugh!! |

I get so pumped when girls ride! Even if they just learned...I can't stand girls that are too worried about "breaking a nail".

| I feel sorry for ya, cuz the guys I ride with totally push me to that next level...and the girl I ride with does too..those guys sound like they are imature. WIthout the constant, "get back in those bindings...you're not done yet..." from the guys I woulda never cleared the wake with big air after only 2 months of riding..wish u lived closer to us, I am always looking for other girls who actually 'rip', not just 'ride'....being pullled behind the boat going inside and outside the wake is NOT wakeboarding...not in my book...thats just getting a pull, might as well put some ski's on!!! and those are the only kinda girls i have ran into...and that SUX! |

Boys are stupid throw rocks at them.
I am turning 30 years old next month and before June of this year I never even jumped in the river that I have lived next to for my whole life. I bought a Essence 131 in June and started ridin'. The guys I ride with all think its cool that someone as old as me and expecially a girl rides. Ignore the guys that make comments to you. Boys are stupid anyways. |

So the guys like you, so they all have to be jerks. That's not always the case, but sometimes it is. I'm older, and came from a different generation, but also from a small town. Is it your boat? Are they jeopardizing you? If they are, I would definately get someone of authority involved (anonymous, I would agree). You could really get hurt with guys acting like asses.
Also, if you can drive to a neighboring town, lake, then I would. I always dated guys from other towns/schools. I never dated ones from where I lived. _________________ "It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt." -- Mark Twain

| I've ridden with a few different crews - all guys except me, and they've all been very nice and encouraging. The attitude it "girls who ride are cool", and my guy friends really push me to try harder. Still, I wish I had more girls to ride with. |

wakeBIGorgohome,
do not give up! I started boarding at the age of 33 only and believe it or not all guys treat me very respectful all the time...they even freak out when I manage a trick well - so maybe age helps.
so just go ahead....guess the guys you are dealing with are just a bit "green behind the ears" (as we say in EU) that is all ! Cheers

wakeBIGorgohome, On behalf of my gender, I'd like to apologise, but in defense these are boys your describing, not men so I hope you dont negativly stereotype us all in the same lot with these dumb@sses. Some of the advice I've read here rings true. I think these boys are totally intimidated by you beating them in what is generally considered a male dominated sport. I also suspect that they are inherently very insecure with themselfs stemming from a lack of er.. shall we say natural endowment. dw had an excellent suggestion, also, ask them if they're natural or is the water just too cold? After that I'd tell my daughter to follow scott a's advice and kick one of them in the pills. It'll get their attention that your serious and mean business.
First chance you get try to find a new set of riders that push you to your limits, not ones that hold you back. If your ever in Illinois your welcome to ride with me, my wife and my daughter. I think you could even give us some lessons.
good luck

Hey wakeBIGorgohome,
I SOOOO support what kennethl suggests and please try not to group us all in an unfavorable light. I support my daughters and their friends both male and female in this sport - we all are just having a blast, so if the guys get you down, come ride with us in Annapolis...
My daughters are just 11 and 14 but are really getting awesome! each time we go out they improve a whole lot more than I...
Girls rock, keep ridin'

I think you need to hang out with new friends, friends that will support you and not try to make you feel bad.
I ride with mostly guys. It is so rare if I get to ride with another chick. All my boys give me mad props. They push me to try new tricks and go bigger, harder. They are all very invaluable to my riding.... |
