Anyone noticing meat prices going up in your areas? I've seen a few items change a bit, but went to look at getting a brisket for this weekend and was shocked. We're up at $6/pound for a full brisket at our grocery store. I'm going to look around at other places, but that is a big jump. Last time I got a whole brisket, it was around half that. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Obviously the result of fear of a beef shortage due to the governments intervention in private land "owners" and ranchers "rights"
Its BS, you have always had a "contract" to purchase a brisket for less than $6/lb and now the store thinks they can arbitrarily raise the price! |

I'm sure drought conditions are going to play into it, as well. I would expect to see a rise, but this was a huge jump. Like I said, last time I bought a brisket it was around $3/pound. Going up to $4-4.50 seems like a reasonable rise for market conditions, but up to $6 seemed odd. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

We always buy in bulk but the prices have not changed much over the past few years.
We just purchased half a beef from a local farmer. Between the cost of the critter and processing at the local shop it came out to $2.57/lb for just about 300 pounds. This is all steaks, roasts, ribs and (extra lean) ground beef - no organs. |

Drought + cold winter. Lots of items are going to go up due to these.... _________________

Supply, low, stressed due to harsh winter and drought.
Demand, high, holiday weekend that focuses on meat and fire instead of dead soldiers. _________________

Sounds good fish. We may start doing that in the next couple years. How do you have it wrapped? I assume you store it in a chest or upright freezer at home?
So, how much of a price increase are y'all seeing in your areas? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

For me it's not so much the price increase in beef but the scarcity of powder so I can reload for all my guns. _________________

LOL. Yup.
I did manage to find a brisket for $3.99 a pound at a butcher/processor. I talked to them more in depth about bulk meat purchases, as well.
fish, are you saying you got 300 pounds of "take home" meat for the $2.57/pound amount? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

The $2.57 I wrote earlier was wrong, it was $2.67. We paid the farmer $1.67/pound hanging weight and the meat shop charged $1.00 per pound for processing. We have an upright freezer and it is packed right now with 300 pounds of beef, some whole chickens, some salmon I caught last fall, venison summer sausage and of course BACON. |

OK, cool. That's a good price.
This place I talked to charges $3.49/pound for a side of beef at a typical weight of 300#. That converts to about 180# of meat that you take home, after processing. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

| Most of the places around here are under $3.00 a lb for a side of beef with upwards of 200# -250# take home (~200# off of a 300# side). |

I'll try to be neutral here. We are currently at about 220 head of cattle and climbing slowly (most spring calves have dropped). Prices are really high and very beneficial to beef ranchers. The challenge is extreme drought conditions in the larges cattle raising areas of the country (KS OK TX) last week we actually applied for a drought aid the government is offering. It's similar to what Australia has done. Luckily, many ranchers have their ponds in areas that collect the most rainfall and have solid bases to keep it. Hay obviously faces the same issue but doesn't benefit from low elevation ponds. So, farmers who keep herds through the winter have been paying a premium feeding. Hobby ranchers (as we call them) dump their cattle in the fall to avoid the winter costs which drives the price down, but have the opposite on us in the spring (start of grilling season) when they re enter the market.

As an example for you guys, last week 4 new calves dropped which equates to around $4,500 by fall for us. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/greasemonkeytv |

Current beef prices have less to do with this winters drought than $7 corn, harsh winter, 2 years ago, China's protein consumption, institutional investors chasing returns in commodities. _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian? |

Okie, we tend to take them to auction in quantity. I'm not against it, you'd just have to arrange transport, butchering, etc for a single. You'll probably find the grocery store is worth the price . _________________ http://www.youtube.com/greasemonkeytv |

The meat place I just bought from slaughters and processes, so we would just need to arrange price and transport. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |
