Newb questions about boats.

I know some of these might have been answered, but I did search and had a tough time finding what I was looking for.

First question is; is it possible to get good wake out of a much older boat? I was looking at Monterey 88-94 boats. Keep in mind I am a complete newbie, I have never owned a boat myself, although my best friends have boats, none of them are designed for wakeboarding.

Also, I know not many people use outboards for wakeboarding, but are there any boats with outboards that are decent at throwing wake? I ask this because I dont want to rule out any options when trying to purchase my boat.

Last question! I was wondering which boats have the fiberglass floors because I wanted to avoid woodrot and have to replace the entire floor.

I saw that post but havent found any of the ski nautique 2001 in my area. Is there another comparable boat? Also, is the wake large enough to wake surf? Ill keep my eye out for one of those, even if its a drive!

the supra sunsport is a comprible boat. allite larger.

the SN2001 is very difficult to surf behind VERY difficult to ever be able to throw the rope. the small hull just isnt well suited for surfing. has a killer vertical wakeboard wake though.

the supra would be good for both

Plenty people are surfing behind their 2001. We do! Plenty more info over @ the2001.com.
I'm sure if you're a bit patient you'll be able to find a good 2001 in your area.

Definately cant go wrong with a 2001 unless space is important to you. the DD and closed bow configuration isn't great for families, but is a great performer for sports.

I would suggest a V-Drive is skiing isn't one of your top priorities. You get the same power, close in perfromance, and much more room...and V-drives as mentioned above have a better wakeboarding wake without adding anythign to the boat.

If you need more room and still need to stay with a DD for cost, the Supra Sunsport is a good choice, as stang has mentioned. I've got an 89 and love it.

Try searching for the thread I/O vs inboard. I think that is the name of a thread that went on for almost 2-3 pages. It is probably in the wakeboard general forum or more likely the general boat forum. You can also go through okie boarder's profile and try to find his posts where he talks about I/O as he has experience with one.

I have ridden behind I/O, outboard, direct drive and vdrive. The direct drive and vdrive will be easier to control your speed and will throw a better wake a large majority of the time (there are good wakes on I/O if you are patient and you set everything up correctly for your particular boat).

I have never surfed but almost everyone on here claims that you should never surf behind an I/O or outboard because the prop is exposed to the rider which is very very dangerous.

As far as the floor goes if you are looking at older boats i think most will have wood floors. There are many ways to check if they are still in decent condition as you can find boats that still are. You want to walk around the whole floor feeling for soft spots and check the bolts that mount the engine to make sure they are tight and do not spin freely. (I dont have much expertise in this area but just do a google search on what to look for before you buy, you may want to look again in the forum as there is probably info on this as well).

We had a 22ft Starcraft with an outboard for about nine years. It was a big deep boat with a lot of power. We used it for skiing and wakeboarding. Though it threw a decent wake it doesn't come close to what our 88 Supra Mariah is. The inboard is made for water sports and it shows.

No matter what you end up with you can have a good time with it. But from my experience with I/O's, outboards, and inboards. Try to find a decent inboard in your price range you will be happier in the end.
