Hi, I am able to perform a deep water start in the normal manner, ie board floating in front of me with knees into chest etc., however I have seen many vids where the riders start with the board underwater, like they are standing upright in the water. I have tired to get into this position, but I can seem to get the board to go under! Any tips? It looks cool when they do it as they just seem to rise up and start boarding.

I dont know about standing up completely underwater, but sometimes the board gets pushed under a bit while people get up and then planes to the top. It dosent for me and a few of my friends but a couple people ive seen it does, but there starting normal.

my board pushes under a few inches and then slowly pulls my fat ass to the top. i would say it goes down like 4-7 inches under the water. not much but still looks like i just stand up out of the water untill you see the board.

I know what you are talking about. I have a friend that does it. got to put a lot of butt into it. I have the same problem and can not get my board to sink but it is doable.

I start out with my board compleatly under it is so much easier, this is how I taught my friend to get up because he could not get up with the board floating.
Just pull the board under and stand strait up like you are standing on your platform. When you get the rope and are ready to take off just lean back a little and tell the driver to go. The driver will not even need to pull you very hard and you will be up. once you get it you will be surprised how easy it is.

Ethan31, So you have the board directly underneath you and then the driver hits it. I dont see how that kind of drag will let you just pop up out of the water. Even if you lean back you still are fighting the force of water from the drive and momentum. Provide some details, I will try it this weekend.

I dont know how it works, but its easy as hell, dont stand striaght up, keep your knees bent some and the board at the slight angle forward.

Try it, you will be like Whoa- thats easy.

It's actually alot less drag. When you're doing a start with the board above the water, all of the surface area on the bottom of the board is fighting against the pull of the boat and creating drag. If you start with the board underwater and angled slightly upwards the only drag that will be created is from the edge of the board, which is obviously much less surface area(less drag). That is why it seems like you pop right out, because it takes so little energy to get up this way and the board pops right about because there is barely any resistence. It takes a little practice, but once you get it you'll be suprised at how easy it is.

Are you riding in salt water? that will make it a little harder to get the board under you. suck one knee to your chest and that is the side that goes under first. Once your board is under you...you should be sitting in a chair. Angle your board up so it will plane and you are good to go. Just takes a couple of tries and you will get it down.

I think it would have the effect of the wedge on a boat, I think it would pull you down.

getting up with the board under water i think is much easier.. the boat can just be in idle speed and all you do is push down and stand up but you won t get all the way up but most of the way.. but there has to be a driver-rider connection there.. but to keep the board under you is get in the water that way.. thats what i do.. also its easier to grab the rope when its going by and just pull yourself sop the board goes under

I can get the board under neath me no problem, it's just that it doesn't seem logical. I personally think that if you cant get the board beneath you it is too big, or the person riding it is a bit weak.

I have seen people get up so many ways its unreal. I was at a local competition, and a dude, just popped up. I don't have a clue what he did, but he was out of the water before the boat moved.

Pet- you can kind of 'jump' when your feet are underwater, maybe he jumped a little and the driver gunned it simotaneuously (haha, butchered that spelling).

no.. thats what i do... the boat is in idle speed and when you have the board under you like that just the way the pull is and everything you can just stand up.. but if the boat doesnt go you will sink back down.. its relly easy.. you just need enough balance to keep the board under you while you wait

I just tried this yesterday and found it was easier. but not worth the effort to get the board under and keep it under.

here.... try holding on to the handle and letting the boat help pull the board under the water to get you in that position, but the boat needs to be pulling you at idle so you can do so

I have the bottom of the board almost completely flat on the water and as i hear my dad throw it into gear i push down and pull hard on the rope and its like I just pop up i have like maybe half a second of resistance or drag the board maybe is under 2 inches of water and comes right back up the only trouble i really have is popping up too fast and the rope slacks up and pops right outa my hands as the boat goes. anyone else do this? i tried the deep water start when i first started wakeboarding but i hated it always felt to akward.

i do a deep-water start every time. it's not hard to get it underneath you when you are just sitting there in the water. you just need to stick the board a little upright in the water and lean forward on the foot that is down, and then lean to the center to get the other end down. a deep-water start is a lot easier on your arms and knees when getting up too. the board will push itself up through the water, somewhat like an airplane wing/air, and you just have to hold on.

Starting like this is so much easier, especially on a wakeskate. All you need to do is lean back a bit and make sure your toes are up a bit so the board planes to the top and doesn't drag. Just try it, it's easy.
