I have issues with Michael Moore's films in the first place. He skews them to fit his own political agenda and in general does a poor job at providing a cogent arguement for his side. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

Interesting. I've always thought that anyone who is very far to any side of an argument is a little strange.
However, and I can't resist, and I apologize for the sigh this is sure to get from you, Nick

It is absurd to say that the attack is America's own fault, but it is not absurd to say that the 9/11 attack is related to American foreign policy.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. But we've already had this debate.
I haven't seen "Bowling," so I can't comment. I am a believer in the right to bear arms, however, and I will say that I haven't seen "Bowling" because I am used to anti-gun people twisting facts around and pointing to (a) then pointing to (b) and assuming that there is a link. So I decided not to watch it, because pointing out illogical statements is a hobby of mine. I was afraid I would explode in the theatre.
Both sides, Michael Moore, and the "take away the Oscar" people, use some pretty inflamatory language that should be a sign that the argument is emotional and not completely logical on both sides.
Maybe I should see this movie? Have you seen it? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

No, I'm kind of curious about it now. Regardless of anyone's political views, I think everyone would agree that documentaries should be factful. This is the issue that bothers me most about it.
I'm don't really care that much about it, just enough to send an electronic form that takes 10 seconds to fill out. I'd never make a webpage for it or even mail a letter....I hate mailing things!

Sure, documentaries should be factful. The debate here is what is "factful?" I think I know what I would consider factful, but there is some grey area here. Like implying that Heston's speach took place at a time when it didn't. How strong is the implication? Does he actually say that the speach took place at a time that it didn't, or does he subtly imply it? How can you prove an implication? Sure, the documenatary probably does mislead but does it actually SAY that Heston's speach was at the time they are leading us to believe? But then again, does a documentary have to be absolutly objective? If the answer is "yes," and a filmaker can not inject his or her own opinion or philosophy, then "bowling" is clearly not an objective documentary. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

I haven't seen the film but I do know a thing or two about American civilization and it's not all about what the schools assign you to read in their textbook. The history books don't tell you that early Americans, once they found out that the small pox they had brought over was killing the indians, gave blankets infested with the virus as gifts to some tribes. American (and most every other country's)history is traced with shameful moments that would be only natural for the country's history to wish to forget. Is Michael Moore anti-american for recognizing some of them.
I have seen his documentary about the GM's original factories in Flint, MI (his home town btw, if it were your home town, you'd be passionate about it too) closing down and the whole town driven into poverty and unemployment. In this film, he exposes the effects on a town of when GM's chairman closed 11 of their U.S. plants and built 11 new ones in Mexico where labor was 5 cents an houror whatever. Who's anti-American? The guy who recognizes some flaws in a capitalistic, free-enterprise society or the guy who gives thousands of American jobs to Mexico in order to save a buck.
I love Americanad am anything but anti-American, but what's wrong with recognizing a few faults and trying to make it a little better? |

I saw the Flint Michigan documentary too. I liked it, but I hate big business, especially when they ruin people's lives and grow richer. So I wasn't very critical, choosing to take everything at face value because it was in line with what I thought at the time.
I don't think MM is anti-American any more than I think the Dixie Chicks or war protestors are anti-American.
I think the point of this post isn't necessarily to bash MM, but to point out that "bowling" isn't an accurate portrayal, and that some bending of the facts took place. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

| "Some bending of facts" is like saying the Hindenberg had a minor glitch. |

That website seems like complete crud to me. The academy has never cared about who it gives awards out to before, why should it care now? Didn't 'Titanic' win best picture in 1997?
