I have been trying to find a way to heat my lake.. Do you think a laser like they wanted to use for the star wars project could heat a small lake? _________________ "The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."

1 calorie will raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree. You're gonna need some serious power buddy. _________________ Get Frugally Green!

Correct. But does it take the same amount of heat to warm that is 15 degrees as it takes to warm water that is 50 degrees, if the exterior temperatur is colder than 15 degrees?
Does that formula take into account the amount of heat it takes to maintain a water temperature? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

If you get like 12 laser pointers it would work. And not the red ones. They are crap. Get the green ones. Here are the steps:
You will need: 12 green laser pointers, 2 forks, 1 220V outlet.
1. Put all 12 laser pointers in your mouth and aim them at the lake.
2. With a fork in each hand, insert the forks into the 220V outlet (it won't work if you try to use 110V)
3. Work the lasers around the lake. Try not to be distracted by the involuntary muscle spasms, cardiac arrest, and burning hair smell.
4. Do this for about 3-5 minutes depending on the size of your lake. _________________ We are wakeboarders and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain. |

cameraboy, that equation applies to any fresh water at any temperature regardless of the air temperature around it. As for maintaining temperature... water and air will naturally come to an equilibrium. You would have to continue to apply energy to the water to maintain the temperature.
Either way, he asked a dumb question because no one has the money necessary to heat a lake big enough to wakeboard on. Not only that, but warming the lake would pose a serious threat to the lake's eco-system. _________________ Get Frugally Green!

We have nucler power plant on a pert of our lake... and it actually makes a cove on our lke like 5 degrees warmer... and thats the part of the lake where our sliders and kickers are so it works out pretty well... |

Ok, I got it. THis is a hard concept for me to get my mind around. So to simply MAINTAIN the temperature, would you have to add less than a calorie? Because if you add a calorie without allowing the previous calorie's heat energy to escape, the temp goes up instead of just maintaining it, right?
How about this one:
Bob can throw a fastball at 90 MPH. IF Bob is in the back of an open pickup truck travelling 50 MPH, and he throws the ball in the direction that the truck has travelled from, will the ball only go 40 MPH? What if he throws it forwards? Will the ball travel 140 MPH? How does that work? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

OK, I think I got It! A huge Hollow cast iron ball with those construction heaters in it so the ball can sit on the bottom and have an opening in the top so air can get in and just run that thing for like a week. It's like 34 deg right now and we only have to go to 60. _________________ "The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."

Rather ironic, seeing as how Hamilton was killed in a duel. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

You should read up on that so you know the full story.
And what does this have to do with heating a lake?

I think I do. At least I've seen the story on the Hist. Channel. I'm not making a statement about gun ownership or anything, I just think it's an interesting irony. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

| He was killed by a cheap shot. The duel wasn't like in the movies where they start back to back and walk away and then fire. They would stand a good ways away and whoever got challenged to the duel got to take the first shot. Hamilton got to take the first shot and he shot his gun straight up in the air. This was out of respect for the other person but showing up to the duel made him not look like a coward. Typically the other person would also shoot their gun in the air and then they would have a mutual respect for eachother. Kinda like when two friends get in a fight, no matter who wins the problem is usually solved. Well Aaron Burr pulled out his gun and shot Hamilton rather than firing it in the air. |

You have to realize that you would not be adding energy to all the water at once. At the same time as you are adding it in one spot, the colder air is taking it away in another spot. It's a continuous flow. Unless everything is at equilibrium (the same temperature), there will be heat transfer going on. Since the cold air is constantly transferring heat away, you have to constantly transfer heat into the water.

Yes
| Quote: | | What if he throws it forwards? Will the ball travel 140 MPH? |
Yes
| Quote: | | How does that work? |
It's all relative to the frame of reference. Relative to Bob and the pickup truck, the ball will go 90mph. Relative to the air, ground, Earth, etc. (which is the frame of reference you are using to determine that 50mph figure for the truck motion), it's different. Since you are going from one frame of reference to another, you have to add the motions together. Take the motion of the ball within the truck's frame of reference, then add the motion of the truck within the Earth's frame of reference. Since we're talking about linear motion here (1-dimensional), it's easy. If you go to 2 or 3-dimensions, you have to add the motion vectors (just a little more complicated). _________________ We are wakeboarders and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain. |

That's what they said on the history channel, and Burr's career was ruined for it.

So then, is the one calorie=1 degree rule affected by the ambiant temperature? If heat is being lost in another spot, would you need to add more than one calorie to make up for that?
How about this one: if a fly is in a jar, with the lid on, and he lands on the glass, does the weight of the jar go up by the weight of the fly? Would this be different if the top wasn't on the jar? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |
