Sorry guys, I'm sure you are all sick of these backroll questions, but I am having serious issues. About 3 summer agos I landed the backroll after a few trys. I went to do it again on my next run and came up short on the rotation and killed myself(not literally, but awful fall). I havent been able to land it since then. I dont know if its my rotation or something else? Everytime my board comes back around it seems to cut across the path of where I am holding the rope and rips it out of my hand. I land on my heels everytime without the rope.

Ive researched higher ed, this site, you tube videos, etc. Im sorry I cant post a video but my camera is to old and my comp is to new. In my analysis everything looks correct up to where my body is horizontal with the water. After that my body starts to crunch into a tuck and then the handle gets ripped from my hand no matter how hard I hold on.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any help. Let me know if I need to clairfy anything.

It's almost impossible to tell what the problem is without video.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Maybe you are throwing it extremely mexican and the board is hitting the rope???

Short progressive edge. Be on edge hard when you hit the wake. Stand tall. Ear to shoulder. Spot landing. BAM

The only time I have seen a backroll getting into the rope is if you are not throwing the board behind you far enough when you start the loop.

If you throw it straight up you can collapse into the rope vs spinning. Althought I have never seen anyone do this and get all the way around to their heels....

video will help.

The links are attached below. I managed to video the previously taken clip off my tv. I apologize for the poor quality. If you can't tell from these videos I can try to re-do it.

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks for your help.

Ha, that looks just like me, same problem,'
You are doing a mexiroll, I can't get to a regular progressive roll, because like you, my head is coming down and forward as I bend over at the waste.
You need to figure out how to stay tall and upright as you roll it tip over tail, not rail over rail
Let me know if you figure out some good key thoughts

Haha awesome video!!

Firstly, you don't need to cut out that far at all. Start out about half as far out. You're edge is fine, just start closer in. When you hit the wake, concentrate on going up with it first. I think you can get it.

Haha yea that video is wack.

jpminter, when you say ear to shoulder what do u mean by that. Because to initiate my rotation I open my hips/shoulders up to the wake and then look up and over my leading shoulder? After you said that, when I watch videos of the backroll done correctly I feel like they drop there ear to there trailing shoulder. Is that what I should be doing?

Yes! You only look over your lead shoulder to spot your landing. That's the last thing you should be doing before your land. To initiate a backroll, just tuck your ear to your back shoulder.

Think of it as a cartwheel. If you're standing still about to do a cartwheel, the first thing you do is drop your ear to a shoulder to get momentum and then you put your hand on the ground followed by your other hand, etc etc. They are the same pretty much except for the fact that a backroll is kind of a reverse cartwheel. They move in the opposite direction. Don't worry about that though. The initiation is the same.

haha. wow no wonder my rotation is sooo wrong. ive been looking up over my front shoulder for the past 3-4 years. haha. its hard being self taught. You would think after 30+ attempts that I would realize something was wrong and try to change it. I guess I just figured I got it once so i would get it again eventually.

what your saying completely makes sense. Thank you so much for your help. Ill give it a try sometime in the next couple weeks and let u know how it goes. I know Ill be able to finally land it.

Thanks for all the help. Youre the man

How late do you want to initiate the rotation? Should you have a lot of your weight loaded on your trailing foot right before you hit the top of the wake?

It took me forever to figure it out, but now that I finally got it a few times it feels right. My skill level isn't anywhere as close to many of the guys and girls on this site, but Ill try to explain it to you.

I took a medium to short (5-10 feet out) progressive edge. And then right before I hit the wake I rock a little weight on my back foot, pull the rope in as close to my front hip/pelvic area as possible. Then rock/crunch my head to my back shoulder (like a backward cartwheel-as someone said earlier in this post). After you try it a few times it will feel comfortable. The hardest part I was having was holding onto the handle, but once I had the correct rotation everything felt right. I then had time to spot my landing, bend my knees, hold onto the rope tight, actually land, and ride away.

All of this has been said many times before, but really concentrate on initiating it with the "backwards cartwheel" movement. Thats what helped me.
