Ok, so I got up the nerve to try a raley a couple of times yesterday, but I am having some problems. From watchin Higher Ed, and reading everything I can about it, it seems that I am supposed to be feeling a strong tug from the boat after I go flat. Well I am not feeling that, as a matter of fact it I seem to loose some tension and either do a dive or a flip. So I am wondering if I need to let my legs swing out then just without the tug pull the handle back to my knees? Any help would be appreciated. I kinda thought just getting the nerve to try it would be the hard part, but now Im kinda clueless.. I know I look like a goob, but dont laugh to hard at the videos. I am uploading them now to my site. Should have them up in a min.

hmm Id say cut harder and keep cutting all the way through the wake, your doing more of a backroll than a raley. make sure you look at the boat also

Looks like you're not getting enough tension on the line. You've got a little slack in the line once you leave the wake. I can't do them so take this with a LARGE grain of salt but it does look like you need to edge harder and up through the wake. Also, extend your arms out towards the boat and make sure and look up. It looks like you're just about doing everything right but bailing on the trick too early. Props on giving it a go though. Takes sack.

Extend you arms all the way out, and then pull them in and down to you waist to level off.

i have never tried one but those landings look like they suck, props for trying

LFPIMP, don't extend your arms all the way, This will make you roll over like a reverse s-bend. keep you elbow a little past 90 degrees and your upper arms pointed down towards the water, like this:

doing this will also cut down on the strain on your shoulders, pecs, and lats, which can really get yanked on if you let your arms snap out and then yank on the rope. I couldn't watch the video, cause I can't play mp4's, but if your doing them right, you don't need to "break the handle over your knee" or any of that. Your natural reaction to being laid out like that is to simply pull your feet under, and push down on the handle. good luck!

Okay flyhigh, I'll chime in here. I watched your video, good work on playing with different edges a bit. On your first 2 attempts, you came off of your edge way too early, and it wasn't nearly enough edge to begin with, hence the lack of line tension. The last attempt was better, and you probably would've started to get the board back under you had you held on...and it would hurt much worse! Laughing

Raleys are all about the edge, once you leave the wake correctly, you just have to hold on really. Take a look at your 3rd attempt. You got on your edge nice and early, that's fine, but instead of holding that edge, you need to get your hips up more and lean your shoulders back against the pull of the rope more as you get closer to the wake. This will create more tension. As you approach the wake, keep building the edge.

You back off your edge when you near the wash from the boat. That's what you'll need to do, but not until you're going up the wake. You want to back off your edge just slightly at the end of your approach. Mentally, you want to think about standing tall as you leave the wake, that will help you wait long enough on the edge release. You actually want to be on a pretty good edge as you leave the wake. Backing off your edge just a little at the wake will really get your board to go out behind you in the air. It's called a "load and release" trick. You load the line with so much tension, then release right at the end and your board has no choice but to go behind you.

(this is a long post!)

One more thing to keep in mind on the edge is to have your weight balanced evenly on your feet. Too much weight on the back foot will cause you to do a laid out back roll that will likely hurt a bit.

In the air, relax (which is the hardest part for me, opening your stomach up to the water sends all kinds of bad signals to the brain) and let your arms out in line with the rope. Keep your head up in the air. You know when you snap somebody with a bath towel? You whip it out there so quick that it snaps back real good. That's what happens on a raley. You're becoming an extension of the rope. With the right edge, you won't have to strain to get the board back under you, it will just snap back.

Land on your heel edge and rock and roll!

Edit: LakeIolaLuke's advice works fine on a cable, like the rider in that picture (or whatever he's behind, that rope is skybound), but behind a wakeboard boat, it will only make it harder to get the board down. I used to try that when I was figuring out how to do them. As soon as I relaxed my arms, the board came down real easy.

toothpick, well, that's how it happens for me. I can do them both behind the boat and on cable, and if I let my arms go straight out, I roll over frontside, and that hurts bad. If I keep my arms under me, it keeps me square to the water and also keeps my upper body from getting snatched really badly. look at this pic- check out his arms.... that's how I do mine. Just not quite that big

Okay well I had a similar problem with the twist in the air as shown by this pic when I first started doing them but now I have them down.<p>
<p>
1) You need to load the line...you do this by edging really hard with your weight even on both feet. If you have more weight on the back leg it will throw you into a huge flip. Make sure you cut really hard with your butt almost skimming the water then when you hit the wake stand up and the wake scoops you.
2) Once the wake scoops you, RELAX and your body will extend...keep your elbows bent slightly (like already mentioned). If you loaded the line right you will feel a tug from the boat through your arms.
3) Pull the handle down to your hips and there you go. Good luck...cuz this trick hurts to mess up hah
