OK, so I keep trying OA 180 (hs) but I cannot for the life of me work it out. I've watched the book etc and can sort of understand what they are on about, but when i try it the rope usually ends up too tight to do a lot and i get stretched out. I know it would be easier to learn the OA 3 first, but in my opinion the OA 1 is one of the most stylish tricks around when grabbed.
At the moment I take a more relaxed backroll approach to the wake but from there I am lost. Anyone give me any pointers, or do you recommend trying the OA 3 first. ( can do 3's on axis ).

cheers.

yeah, I cant' do them regular, but I did one switch accidently once, and it felt really cool, so I started doing them on purpose switch. They're much easier switch imo

I do them switch and regular. So steezy when grabbed. Can you do backrolls? Do almost the same approach and movement to initiate the roll, just don't throw it quite so hard. You don't need to edge as hard as a backroll. If you fall on your butt. Try throwing it out the back a little more and just be ready to pull the board back underneath you. I would say they are easier than OA 3.

jpminter, yeah I can do backrolls. I take it I need plenty of line tension then? and just pull the board down when i feel the pull. I may be letting the board out behind me too early. Do you need to wait and then let it out? I agree about the grabbed ones, they are the dogs bollox.

No, you can throw it out the back right off the wake. You want to throw it more like a mexican backroll or you will have trouble getting it back underneath you. The great thing about this trick is that you can load the line however you want. If you load it like a backroll, then you will be able to get it more off axis. You can go in with less tension but you won't be able to take it as far OA. The more tension and the more OA you go, the more time you will need to get it back underneath you, not to mention having to pull that much harder. Play around with it on a tramp if you can.

Check out JD Webb. He throws them a few times in this video. Check out 0:27, 0:43, and 1:19. He throws them a bit differently than I do and he usually grabs melan. I have trouble with that one on this trick so I usually grab nose or mute.

Many thanks JP, I can picture it much better with your reference to Mexi-roll. Will have a crack at it again in a few days.
Cheers.

i learned an off 3 first and got those dialed for a long time and decided to just go try an off 180 one day so i just threw it like i threw my 3's and when i would normally pass the handle and turn to look back at the boat, i'd keep my eyes locked on shore and just push the handle down with my chest forward... stuck it. I think mine go 270 and i bring them back to 180 which seems easier to land more on your toes

I do oa melan 180s at o-dub, but I started doing hoochie krypts and just changed the way I rotate for the 180. Itnsead of thinking "grabbed raley, 180 on the way down" I try to get the grab early, and start rotating as soon as my hand touches the board. I just let my front foot travel up, then bring the handle to my back hip. Much more styley imo than a hoochie krypt

I'm yet to have a bad fall or even screw it up yet. I think learning your off 3's first really helps. You get the feel for off axis, just when you go up, dont take your eyes away from where your going to land( like looking behind you for the 3) and you wont go three, keep the handle close and point your chest to shore, and get on the toes so u dont butt check, cuz those suck
