Do you drink alcoholic beverages? At what age do you think it is acceptable for people to start drinking. I started drinking when I was 15 or so and I know there are some people that started younger. I also have friends whose parents let them drink. They are 19 and 17, buthave been drinking for awhile.
At what age do you think it's ok to buy beer for someone, or should you always abide by the legal age?

I started drink when I was 17 on the weekends during parties. But I didn't drink every day. I still drink usually on the weekand and on the boat ever once and a while.

my parents were cool with it when i was 17. aslong as you're not stupid about it i'd say 16/17 is a good age.

I started drinking pretty early in life (I'll leave that up to the imagination). Personally I think young adults should be allowed to drink at 18. Here is the reason --> When I got to college I had already been exposed to alcohol for some time. The people who had never really been around it were the ones that were ending up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning and eventually getting kicked out of school because it took over their lives. I don't condone parents "letting" their kids drink under 21 though. That only leads to unnecessary criminal charges that could be avoided if they were never involved. The parents of a good friend of mine used to let us drink every once in a while in their home, but those were different times (even though I'm only 26, times are much different now).

Just be smart kids. Don't be stupid and you'll be fine. Wink

I started pretty young.

There's nothing wrong with it, thats why I let my kids drink Why just a couple of weeks ago I got a couple of kegs for my kids. They had this powder-puff football game in the park and were gonna initiate some younger girls into the senior class, so I thought it'd be a lot more fun if all the kids were drunk. I know SOME of them had a great time...probably too great a time Rolling Eyes

Jbelson, I bought some 12-ers for 'em too! From what I hear it was really fun. Confused

I can't drink anymore, I found out I'm allergic to alcohol. But I did it when I was younger. I would make my kids wait 'til they were 21 'cuz there's just too much that can happen if I let 'em drink & they get into trouble. Case in point, the parents who bought beer for those girls in Illinois are probably gonna get some jail time & a minimum $1000 fine.

DCovington, the reason people who drink their first time at college end up in emergency rooms isn't 'cuz they have low tolerance for alcohol. It's 'cuz they're hopping from party to party getting more & more alcohol at each one. Even if they stay at just one party, there's TONS more drinks at a college party than any high school party. Plus there's way less risk of getting busted by an authority figure so kids go wild with it.

I just thought I'd screw up the poll. I don't drink cause I'm alergic. One sip and my face looks like this Embarassed I would still drink occasionally but never more than 1 or 2. Then one day I had dinner with my girlfriend and had some wine. After about 2 sips I broke out in hives. Haven't touch the stuff since.

I started drinking in 8th grade - at bars. I live in Germany and that's what we did on the weekends...go to downtown Wiesbaden to a bar called Big Ben and get hammered...there was also a roller rink/bar (Germans are weird) we used to drink at. By 10th grade I was drinking every weekend at Die Radler (The Wheel) in Stuttgart....we all were - it was like college light. Amazing what conservative (military) parents will let their kids do when they think they are safe.

Problem came when I moved back to the states in Jan of my Junior year....no more bars Sad I couldn't believe it! "What do you mean we MIGHT be able to get some beer this weekend?" Culture shock.

As long as my Dad was around I could drink whenever. I got drunk for the first time when I was 17. Lately I drink more beer than I drink water. That's all going to stop because I'm going to start working in the mornings and late night drinking just doesn't mix well with work.

I drink now, but I never touched the stuff till I was 20. I played football in high school and my first year of college, and nobody on either of the teams drank. We all kept eachother away from the stuff. Once I stopped playing, it was ON! (for better or worse)

Allergic to alcohol. What a sad condition.

Buergday, that's really rare. On all the teams I've been on college and HS we drank a lot after games. It was a celebration thing. In season we didn't drink very much just due to being tired and all that.

Jester, that wasn't my point. It wasn't that their tolerance was lower (which is probably a fact also), but that they didn't know their limits. Also, the sudden abundancy of alcohol, curiosity, and peer pressure drove a lot of my college friends to alcoholism. Those of us that were used to it took it in stride and came out fine.

DCovington, I dunno about alcoholism but definate abuse and lack of control. You always see 'that guy' who ends up throwing up all over someones house.

Yeah Nor*Cal, that may have been a stretch. I just remember the guys (and gals) freshman year that ended up in the hospital. Almost always it was someone who had never really been exposed to alcohol. Actually, now that I think about it, there was at least one guy who did eventaully fall into the alcoholic category.

Nahhh, just a nerd of Asian descent.

I have a question for those of you who drink:

What is the enticing point of drinking to the point of blacking out or waking up the next morning feeling like crap & having no recollection of the previous nights events?

I've never done that. But I could understand how the crappy feeling would be worth the lack of recollection of the previous night's events.

So do you have the mutant gene too?

I realized drinking wasn't for me after doing exactly what you described.

Funny you should ask.....I've consummed ETOH in minimal amounts and never had a reaction. But then the rest of my family does in various degrees.

I've never aquired the taste for the stuff, beer, wine,spirits..... Once in a Mauve moon I'll have a rum with coke or OJ
