Do any of you do this? The gas gauge on my 88 Nautique is broken and usually I'm okay but every now and then..... Anyway I was wondering if there is a safe way to store an extra gas can on you boat. I'd kind of like to put it in the bow locker but I'm worried something might happen to it. Any ideas?

I keep an extra gas can back in the truck. It's not much of a hike, so I feel safer leaving it there. A 5 minute hike is better than spending $3/gallon at the marina, and is definately better than finding out too late that the can leaked all over the boat - that would be BAD!

Carrying extra gas is fine as long as it's not stored in an enclosed area. If the container is in an enclosed area, fumes that may escape from the container have an opportunity to reach an explosive level. In addition, gas fumes are heavier than air and, given the opportunity, will find their way to the bilge...bad because they can collect until they are explosive and they are near multiple potential sources of ignition. If the container is kept in an open-air area, all of these problems are avoided.
