Changing my steering cable on my 2002 X-star. When I try to go and loosen the single big nut that attatches the cable to the cable bracket near the back of the boat, the whole threaded bracket/sleeve thingy starts to spin? ugh. I tried tightening the three nuts that hold that bracket/sleeve in place, but they are so difficult to get at and get a wrench on both the bolt head and nut. Any ideas to help? I was thinking of taking out the one big nut that holds the bracket assembly there to the bottom of the boat and then try to pull the whole thing out of the bilge area to get a better angle at it? Think that will work?. Thanks

have you tried going to www.tmcowners.com

This is a MC only website that, when I owned my 02 xstar, solved alot of my MC specific questions.

fyi, I pulled the sleeve out that the steering cable runs through by removing the single 3/4" nut that holds the sleeve to the bracket on the bottom of the boat. Pulled it out of the bilge area and was able to get it loosened up. New steering cable now installed. Also, I did end up having to remove the floor panel. Thought I could have done it without doing so. It really was pretty easy to get out.

I tried to change out my cable in my old X-10 a couple of years ago.

It's a shtty job.

The problem I had was once the large nut was loose and the cable was disconnected from the rudder, I couldn't pull it past the gas tank. The Nut was too big. You have to pretty much loosen all the bolts to the gas tank and lift up the tank to get the cable out. Honestly, one of those jobs where you just pay someone else to do it.

Two guy job...
