Anyone have them for your boat?
Anyone have any recommendations? We kind of realized as we were camping this past memorial day and my friend got stung by a scorpion (he was ok) that we had no way to call for help had something worse happen....
Anyone have an emergency radios that work well for.......emergencies....haha |

| Cell phone... but I never go anywhere that secluded (unfortunately). Most rangers monitor specific family radio channels - not sure where you ride, but that may be a cheap/easy option. |

They recommend them for boating because not only will authorities get the call to respond but others in the area can come help also. With that said I never got one. My cell-phone works on all of the lakes around here.. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

You should talk to some of the responders in your area to see what they recommend. Their stuff is probably on repeaters with law enforcement but they'll know the best way to communicate in an emergency. Short of that, marine VHF is nice but only if there's someone monitoring in range of your transmitter. Same issue with a CB in your boat if there's highways nearby (you'll need a nifty handle for this). Maybe there's a market for Onstar in boats? Hmmm..... _________________

| tball - sadly, onstar is just a verizon cell phone... the only satellite piece is the GPS receiver. |

tmbrown, so the airbag detection and all that other stuff only works if I'm in cell coverage? are you sure? that seems pretty lame. _________________

| afraid so... The analog ones used to work more reliably in the back woods, even if not that clear... the new ones require you be in a good CDMA coverage area. Common misconception, unfortunately. So, if you drive your car off a cliff, make sure you have a good signal first. |

///KE B()/R|)ER, i was reading your post "and my friend was stung by a..." ( i was thinkg bee, and said friend was allergic.) but a scorpian...?!... completely caught me off guard. i am glad you friend is ok, and dang what a story to tell if i was said friend. "yeah well i have been stung by a scorpian...and i was fine"
Being stung by a scorpian is similar to surviving a bear attack or fighting off a lion IMO. |
