I'm trying to land an invert before I go back up north for the summer but I don't know what the easiest one is. I'm also not great with the terminology yet, so if you have a link to show me what it looks like I'd appreciate it Smile

The past few times I've been trying what I think is a HS front roll. I ride regular and come in HS, then throw myself over my front leg in a sort of cartwheel motion. I nearly landed it yesterday but came down weird on my knee so I decided not to push it. Is this a relatively easy invert, or am I a little out of my league?

Oh year, I'm not great at committing to back flips, its a long story, so please keep that in mind when recommending tricks Smile

That invert is kinda difficult... (It sounds like a HS FrontFlip)

I recommend ...

1) a HS Backroll, exactly the opposite cartwheel rotation of the HS Front Flip

2) or a Tantrum, which is a straight back flip, but it uses the same "trip" motion that you used to start your rotation on the HS FrontFlip

FLWake, You have to go toeside from there. don't be a heelside hero. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm just playing man, do what is fun for you, don't let anyone else set your style for you. learning some toeside tricks will make you a much more well-rounded rider though

I just came back from a session, probably my last of the year until October or so

I tried doing a few HS Backrolls, got them on camera but they look a lot more like off-axis 360's than anything else.

I also tried to do a few tantrums but I don't think I'm "tripping" right because I basically just stop at the top of the wake and end up having no air other than trying to throw myself backwards. I'll get some vids up probably tomorrow.

LakeIolaLuke, whats wrong with being a heelside hero Razz I can't get nearly the same air going TS as I can HS so I've been neglecting that side a bit...

FLWake, The HS backroll and OA 3 have essentially the same board movement, you just pass the handle around your body on the 3.

as for the tanny's, I'd have to look at a vid to help on those, but when you get it down, you should really get popped over backwards, without having to do much work to flip at all.

on that backroll if it looks like a off 3 that means ur turning ur head. thats why i was doin when i first learned them last week. instead of turning ur head and trying to roll that way, TUCK your head, try to touch your ear to your back hip, like crunch your sides

this should help alot

OuachitaWaker, I just watched a vid of myself doing it and you're exactly right. I thought "its like a back flips so I better try and look where I'm going" but that put in me in more of a spin than a roll.

If I can get out again before I go back to school again next year I'll definitely keep that in mind.

I'll post a vid too if I can figure out how to cut out the first 75% of it.

i hate backrolls. i fall so hard, always under-rotate and catch my nose, loose both feet, sometimes lose my helmet, always am disoriented and my head is splitting in pain.

--cresko--, Laughing dang man! Ive never had a real bad fall on a backroll. In fact, when learning them, I only underrotated like 3 times. Guess Im lucky. HS FS 3s on the other hand destroyed me numerous times

I had the same problem and went to Tantrum's. Never had a bad fall on one yet and can get about every other one now. If you're going to do a backroll just make sure and commit 100%. Tantrum you can get away with under rotating and it still won't hurt. Because my first few backroll attempts were so bad I have a total mental block for them. Go up get partially around and instead of finishing the trick I brace myself for the crash and thus stop the rotation and crash very hard. What sucks is I know I do it but can't stop. I've moved on, I'll come back to it later.

Exactly. I thought after getting really used to doing Tantrums that it wouldn't bother me going back to backrolls. Nope, tried a couple more the other day, same result, totally stretched out, flat out belly flop faceplant. Guys in the boat were like "DUDE, YOU O.K!!!" I'm just like "oh yeah, fine, that's just how I do backrolls." Moved onto 3's now and am having much better luck. Freaking backrolls Rolling Eyes

--cresko--, Epic, if you're under-rotating every time on teh backroll you are probably either not keeping the handle in tight enough or you are trying to throw them too early. You should be able to keep the handle in tight just by focusing on it, DO NOT LET GO!!! If you let go this will kill the rotation immediately.
As regards throwing the Backroll to early, this is a slightly more difficult mental obstical to overcome. By throwing it early you lose all pop and you have to get round much faster as you have less time in the air. It sounds f-ed up but the later you strat the roll the more time you'll have to do it!

The reason you can throw tantrums is because you do not need the handle in tight. Really focus on keeping it by your hip as you leave the wake and right through the trick.

You clearly don't have a problem with going upside down if you are throwing Tantrums, so I guarantee if you do both the above things (handle in tight and don't start the roll until you get the Pop at the top of the wake) you will NOT under-rotate. You WILL find you have loads more time and can probably even spot your landing.

I apologise if you were not looking for advise but there are so many tricks that follow on from the backroll that it would be a shame for you to skip it.

Wasn't looking for it but definately appreciate it and it makes a lot of sense. It doesn't even bother me to do them because I'm so used to doing Tantrums now that being upside down isn't a problem. I think you're right though that I'm hucking it way to early and am definately letting the handle waaaaay out.
Thanks for the help.
