Its so frustrating, everytime I go out, and I'm ready to hit a backroll or tantrum, I just have a mental block and can't get the balls to try it. I've watched several tutorials, from 'the book' to other trick tips and what not, but i just can't seem to get the courage to go out there and try it. spins and what not don't scare me nearly that much, even though from what i've heard they hurt more. i can't land a 360 more than 2/5 times, but at least i've got it. now i just need to get a backroll or tantrum, or mexiroll or frontroll under my belt. what have you guys done to calm your fears and jitters of trying your first invert?

Jmass03, there is not really an easy way to stop that fear, all I really did was I slowed the boat down a little, and tried it. Get a video camera and record it, because it's always sweet to see your first invert attempt on film Cool

All I can say is just go out there and get pumped, and go for it. There is NOTHING to be scared of, so just do it!

I think this is pretty natural....

As you get better and better, you fall less and less, and fear falling more and more....

Just think back to when you were 1st learning, and fell 10 times per set. You are still alive.... one more won't kill you.

Just get out there and commit. I agree that it takes guts the first time. I was really nervous as well, but after you try it and fall (which you will) you will realize that taking a regular fall from a W2W jump is often much worse than a fall from an invert. You will laugh about not being able to try an invert after you attempt you first one. And then... you will be trying every invert out there. Just go out and huck yourself in the air, if you have watched the trick enough and visualized it enough then you will complete the trick at least 75% and the fall won't be bad.

I recommend doing it quickly. Take a couple of quick jumps then do it. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. Took me forever to try a backroll and tantrum. One day I literally rode behind the boat for half an hour cutting in to the wake and back out. Honestly though, tantrums hurt less than almost any wreck I've ever taken. I crashed 20-25 times before finally landing a tantrum and not a single one of them hurt in the least. Backroll's can hurt if you wuss out and don't commit. Trust me though, when you land one, it;s worth every one of the wrecks.

my first invert i ever attempted was a tantrum just cuz i can throw backflips on the trampoline and on the ground like there's no tomorrow. took me a good 3 trips out to get the balls up to throw it.
My inspiration? I had a boatfull of hot ladies with me. I ate crap, but they girls were all impressed, and went to school the next day telling everyone I was the best wakeboarder they'd ever seen.

As for the falls...the only ones that suck are when you don't get the full rotation and get a nice slap in the face, but that's the worst i've ever had, and that just hurts your ego more than anything....especially with the "OOOHHHHHH!" coming from the boat

Yea, my parents make me go to the doctor and get the "Turn your head and cough" treatment. I really dont want to go, but suck it up and do it. I'd take a fall from a w2w tantrum over some guy touching my nuts, ANY DAY.

My advice, SUCK IT UP, you can do it, there's nothing to be scared of. I'm most likely going to face the same delema, I'll probably try a tantrum this summer.

just make sure when you do it, YOU DO IT. everytime i dont commit 100% to the backroll, i eat stuff. it looks more like a off axis 3 or upside down railey, the board goes out behind me, but when i really throw it hard its alot better

3/5 times if i dont commit my left foot will come out of the binding when i land and i get a nice gash

I hope you do it! I also will have to get some nuts to do an invert also when my lake warms up and I start heading out there

You need new bindings. And the "gash" comment probably isn't helping his cause. Tantrum is a little easier because you don't have to commit as much. You can slow the boat down to 18mph go in there, huck it and let go of the rope at half speed and still get 2/3 of the way around and it still won't hurt at all. Then as you gradually get more confidence, you can throw it harder, hold your edge longer and work on hanging onto the rope.

Exact same fear last summer. Slow the boat down to about 18 to 19 miles an hour. And take it slow and definately hold on to the rope. If you land on your head, trust me, it feels like your diving in a pool. If you fell on a 360, it hurts alot more than a backroll.

OuachitaWaker, I imagine you are riding regular if your left foot is coming out?

If you are regular, you are probably just under-rotating a bit and the nose of the board is entering the water first on your way down (kind of spearing into the water). If you have quite a lot of lateral speed wen this happens it is quite likely and common that it will pull the board off your front foot.

(Not sure you wanted any advice having looked back at your message but I thought an explanation might be useful?)

Jmass03, Are you riding with guys that are throwing them? Usually that is enough to get the nads to try it. Boat fluff wouldn't hurt either. I have found scarecrows to be the least painful invert to crash on.

Ya boat fluff and a ton of friends got me into inverts. Went for a tanny and kinda made it 1/2 way around. but it didn't hurt on the bail so i kept trying. after like 3 horrible attemps i tried the backroll and actually got it around. the next weekend i nailed a backroll and now they're like second nature. Now it's Tanny Scarcrow and ts frontroll comin along.

The best way to look at it is this....

I spent some time like you afraid to let my self go inverted. It's a different feeling being upside down. The prob here lies in the fact that the more you half ass it, because of being scared the more likely you are to under rotate and really mess yourself up. After a few "scared attempts of landing on my head I finally told myself i was just going to go for it. The first attempt with this attitude i got all the way around and landed but didn't have the handle. I have been working on a backroll since last summer and have gotten it a few times but nothing consistent. If you are really worried get a helmet and then let her rip. Plus having a few chicks to show off for prob helps. I just get to annoyed having them on the boat on glass days because all they want to do is swim.

Ya man i know what you mean. i used to be kinda scared n not tuck hard anough on my rolls and i'd eat stuff catching my nose on the way down. wasn't too pretty. I'm fortunate enough the fluff i have with me all the time is both unreal gorgeous and at the same time they love to wakeboard and understand how to go about a nice day on the water. they know we'll swim after like 2 sets and they can do whatever (usually wash their hair). But they like hitting the water on the board so it's always a good time.

i've been on a tramp for a while and have to motion down with decent extension on a shitty old tramp. I'm pumped up and gonna try it. i just bought a 750lb sac and pump for the boat for a bigger wake. i just need to get on the water. may long is the date, i doubt i'll try er first weekend out but i may try a new invert or spin like a ts 3 or a scarecrow.

Not that I've landed a 3 or tantrum yet, but the falls I've experience from attempting the 3 have hurt me more than any on the tantrum.

Lots of different ways but i get most people to start by slowing the boat down for them so its quite washed out. then to try a toeside front roll. basically just like try to roll over. you land on your back doing no speed at all. it fires you up to do more and more, its great to get a feel of being the other way up!. all you do to start is come in toeside both hands on and just try to get your body up and over your back arm, kinda dive yup and over it. This will become apparent when you try it. i myself took a really hard one when learning flips and i had a mental block for a while. this method sorted me out. You do the first one then you just want to go bigger and bigger. Being a toeside front its very hard to land so usually change tactics and go for a backroll or tantrum when more comfortable with going upside down.

believe me you will be like going home freeling like you justr won a million dollars Wink

you can try another technique like toeside back rolls one wake are easy to learn and dont really hurt without the forward momentum of going big across two wakes. This trick is anoter one that first i would encourage you toi land on your as* to start

good luck i hope this helps

My suggestion is the same Keun just made.
I had the same problem, then tried a TS back roll and later a mexiroll and TS frontroll... the falls are easy/nonpainful and you get used to being upside down....
I never landed those but am now throwing a progressive BR and near landing it.

I totally agree with Kuehn. My first few tantrum attempts we slowed the boat down to 17mph, cut in slow, hucked the handle and basically did a back dive. After that I tried throwing it harder and harder and after getting comfortable crashing and losing the fear, finally got the boat back up to 22mph and started hanging onto the handle.

I just mean don't worry about holding onto the handle. Just slow the boat down, cut in and let go of the handle if you're not comfortable with it. This will just help get the feel for being upside down and realizing the falls shouldn't hurt.
