Hey,
I am in the process of buying a $5000 boat. I would like to know how much registration, insurance, taxes, and any other "hidden" costs might occur to in one year. I realize I should be more specific, but I am just looking for a ballpark figure.
Thanks.

| I hate to give you the bad news, but, the hidden costs seem to NEVER end. |

i live in texas and the tax was 6.25% the registration fee was under 50 bucks. i told them i paid 1000 bucks for my boat so everything cost me like 125.
the only hidden costs are just maintenance and stuff like when you break down in the middle of the lake and pay someone to tow you back and then pay a boat mechanic to fix it.
other than that you should be cool. hope this helps but i'm from texas, it may be different. |

In UT they take the blue book value to calculate registration fees. My boat books out around $6500, it was $75 to register. Full coverage insurance through Progressive runs about $275/year for me. In the past you could just b.s. what you paid for your boat so registration could be cheaper, but they caught on to that.
My bro just got his SAN registered here in UT, it was $550! His insurance is a little higher than mine. Another friend has 01 Tige 21V his insurance is actually cheaper than mine, but he has his car through them too.
You may have to get you trailer registered too. In UT if you trailer weighs less than 1000 lbs you don't have to get it registered. I have a single axle trailer and didn't need to get it registered.
You'll probably be looking at $50-100 to get your boat registered. It seems that the average for boat insurance is $250-$350/yr. Even my old POS '78 Glastron was about the same to insure as my new boat.
Hidden Costs, could be anywhere from a $.10 fuse to a $3000 block. |
