Why did they stop making them? or at least stop bringing them to the US. Seems like with gas prices going up they would be a lot more attractive. Resale on any TDIs is always excellent. Did they just not sell well?
Is Mercedes Benz the only manufacturer still selling diesel cars in the US? I can't believe there is not a viable market for a low-to-mid range diesel car... |

emissions standards are tough to meet with diesels...not sure that's why, but that'd be my guess _________________

Jeff206,
From what a guy told me, who owns 2 TDI's, the old engines didn't meet the newer emmission standards, so they are making new engines for the US. Here's what i see on Wikipedia
"For the 2007 model year, however, strict U.S. government emissions regulations have forced VW to drop most diesels from their U.S. engine lineup, but a new lineup of diesel engines compatible to U.S. standards are due for 2008." |

Pulled TDI for '07, coming back in '08 with Blutec emissions controls. _________________ wakeboards

Until recently VW has been the only manufacturer still bringing diesel cars into the US. Unless you find a grey or black market car they are pretty much your only choice.
I don't know how long MB has been putting the CDI in the 230 either, I want to say that's a pretty recent thing though... _________________ wakeboards

Jeff206,
Why not get a TDI from after 1996, I believe any TDI past that can function on only Biodeisel. Does she have to have something brand new? Or is Pre owned alright? |

| Yeah it looks like that's pretty much the only option. It doesn't have to be brand new but I got the impression she doesn't want something more than a few years old. |

Jeff206, that's good, the newer VW PD (Pumpe Düse) TDI's make more power anyways. Very solid engines, you might see if you can still find her an 06 Jetta somewhere. I know some dealerships may still have a few left over. _________________ wakeboards

I bought my dad's 02 tdi when he upgraded to the 06 tdi, both are solid cars, but the 06 is really nice. DRAGON88, hit it on the head the PD's have much more power, and now that it is break'n in he's getting better milage. He said he got 48 running 75+ (hand calculated) the other day. We got that in the city last tank! Thank god the summer blend is back in. Pretty sure you can get a conversion for the 06's to run on vegy oil but don't think there is anything special you have to do to run bio. Go to tdiclub.com and do a search to make sure. _________________ Don't look at me in that tone! |

Is she making her own BioD, buying manufactured BioD or using veggie oil? _________________

The VW Diesels should be back in 2008 as Dragon88 already mentioned. Not all of them are gone for 2007 though .... the Touareg is the only one. 310hp and 553 ft/lbs ... but too pricey IMHO.
My understanding is that they overproduced the 2006 TDI's to help cover the 2007 demand, but that is based on questionable sources. |
