Uh, are you asking us to research prices for you????
My wide suggestion would be the Tokina 12-24. I love mine. Its sharp, great colors and built like a tank. I got it $400 used(like new condition) and they go for $500 new. As for the fish, I have no knowledge about the Nikon fisheye, but the Tokina zoom fish looks interesting.
Are you going to sell your d70?
IMO, I would not go over 4gb for cards, but some people like bigger cards. I don't like the idea of that many pictures on one card. 2gb cards are perfect for my 20D, so 4gb cards would probably be perfect in the d200.
The 70-200 and battery grip are no brainers Very Happy

thanks RUSSIAN. and yeah, i was hoping you guys would research for me. Wink

part of me is thinking of switching to canon...maybe a 30d w/ grip, 70-200 2.8is, a nice wide angle, 15mm fishy and speedlight. and yeah, i'll probably stick w/ 4gb cf card. are sandisk extreme iv the fastest right now?

if i stick w/ nikon, i would probably go w/ 17-55 2.8 and 70-200 2.8vr.

If you're going Nikon, a gimme is the 10.5 fish... It is the one lens Nikon does that I WISH Canon copied... But now with the Toki fish zoom I'm wondering if it's the answer to my prayers!

I just got a Tokina 840, 80-400 and I must say I am thoroughly impressed by it. They are built tough and pretty damn sharp. I am actually looking towards Tokina for all my future lenses. Although they don't have a huge lineup of lenses, they do cover all the bases. Definitely don't dismiss them when looking.

id go with a 20D, its more suited for sports photography. also if you do plan on going with canon, the 30d and 20d are 1.6x crop cameras which means the 15mm fisheye will just be a wide angle lens with minimal distortion. look into a tokina 10-17mm fish (i have one and its awesome).

if you stay with nikon get the 10.5 fisheye. good luck.

weird. isler used to shoot wake w/ nikon. doster and rodrigo still shoot wake w/ nikon. all are contributing photographers for wakeboarding mag.

well i didnt mean out of all cameras. for canons, the 20D and markIIN are the sports cameras. 20D=5fps, IIN=8.5fps

i dont really know about nikons that much besides they have a flash sync speed of 1/500 and the 10.5 fish is a killer lens.

jumalian, It all comes down to personal preference, both are great cameras, and seeing that you're coming from Nikon I don't see why you would want to learn an entirely new operating layout.

Canon does seem to have the sports market pretty locked up nowadays however, check out the sidelines of almost any professional sporting events and you'll see way more big whites then big blacks. Does it mean Canon is better? Certainly not, it just seems that they are proffered by sports shooters.

DRAGON88, The white lenses are just plain cool.

I read a thread on another board where a guy with a white lens got mixed in the middle of a media type photoshoot where the media had all white lenses and it turned out to be Richard Branson doing some promo on the beach. He had some cool pics posted on it.

Two things: First Letchworth also shoots with nikon(film). Second, FPS does not make or break sports photography. For alot of people out there its actually a crutch. Fire away and hope you get "the shot"

Joe, I wouldn't jump ship for the 30D. 5D yes, any of the 1 series yes, but not the 30D. I say this cause your bound to lose money on the switch and with the impending upgrade to the 30D line, the replacement will likely smoke the 30D. If it doesn't then you can pick up a 20D for dirt cheap... Very Happy

IMO one of the big reasons canon leads in sports is because they have super tele IS lenses. The marketing of the white lenses obviosly comes into play, but having IS lenses really takes the cake. The 400 2.8L IS is considered one of the BEST lenses ever, and I don't believe anyone else has anything that would compare to it

1. you need a fast camera for things called "sequences". and yeah it can and would most likely be used as a crutch but why not have the security of knowing you got the shot somewhere in the 10+ pictures you took in 2 seconds.
2. you dont use IS when shooting sports, its basically useless.

i dont think this questions even been asked but what is the camera going to be primarily used for (guessing wakesports), it helps determining what lenses should come first.

If you want "security" (and I use that term loosely), then learn how to shoot a photograph. Figure out exactly what point in time you wanna take the picture, and take it at that time. Don't just fire off a burst of frames because even at 8.5fps you can't always get a good sequence of a kickflip on a wakeskate.

Mr. Letchworth probably only uses Nikon because he knows it's inferior, so shooting with it makes him actually put some sort of effort into overcoming his horrid equipment so that he can shoot the next cover shot for whichever publication he wants to grace the cover of. I've actually heard rumors of him wanting to take the jump into Ansel Adams' steeze and shoot all of his action with a pinhole camera. Totally baller.

well, not all sports are shot on a monopod in broad daylight, but you have a point. I doubt pro football shooters are using IS but alot of people that do not shoot in ideal conditions are using it. Auto racing comes to mind. IS and panning go hand in hand and thats what those guys shoot almost exclusively.
I know your into shooting skateboarding. Don't most pro skate photogs shoot medium format? I'm not sure but I don't think you can get much faster then a couple frames a second with MF.
I'm not a huge fan of sequences anyway. Some are great, and some aren't. But it's hardly the reason to buy a particular camera(especially a $4000 one)

Nikon and Canon... Oranges and Oranges... It all comes down to personal preference. Frame rates are relatively the same, autofocus speeds are relatively the same, design contsruction and quality are relatively the same.

It seems the area Canon is beating Nikon soundly these days is in image quality, especially at higher ISOs. Canon has recently announced a MarkIII that is supposed to be an incredible camera, with even better image quality at high ISOs than the MarkIIN (and better autofocus, which is crazy, 'cause the MarkIIN's autofocus is ridiculously good):

There has always been a belief that Nikon's glass is actually sharper than Canon's, regardless, both companies make great products. You just have to figure out what your needs are and what equipment will best suit those needs.

Are you already invested in Nikon, don't feel like switching and taking a loss, and can get by with the equipment they offer? Then great. But maybe you shoot a lot of low light situations like rail events or indoors in bad lighting, but you want to be able to get a print that doesn't have a ton of noise -- then maybe Canon is for you.

As with any big purchase of any kind, some research should be done first. Check out places like www.dpreview.com, www.robgalbraith.com, and www.sportsshooter.com for quality reviews and opinions. Several websites also have classified sections that can be great for finding quality, used equipment. My 28-70mm f2.8 L and 70-200mm f2.8 L were purchased used back in 2003 and I still use them today. I'd probably still be using my original 1D that I bought used, too, but I managed to kill it in a minor water housing accident a couple years ago... whoops...

In the end what you shoot with doesn't matter at all -- it's the product you create. If all you do is worry about the technical specs of your camera and what the compeition is coming out with, then you're obviously not worrying enough about your craft and the pictures you're actually taking.
