I've been boarding since early last summer, came from a skiing background with some skateboarding. I taught myself how to get up, edge, carve, do surface 180's, ride switch, and jump solely with the help of this forum. While I appreciate the hell out of that, there is one piece of advice on this forum that I had not followed until last week.
I bought "The Book" Volume 2 "Building a Foundation" and I just got it yesterday and watched it last night. I wish I had bought this a year ago, as it had so many things that make complete sense in it for getting started with jumps and tricks. If you are someone who can get yourself up, ride a little, and are just starting to work on carving, surface 180's, riding switch, and jumps BUY THIS DVD.
It is only $30 and you can watch it after each outing. It has good drills in it and, even though I have learned some of the stuff on my own, I am going to go back and do the drills because I saw some stuff I should be doing that they made me think about with the easy way they explained things. Needless to say, if I had been smarter and bought this thing last year I would have advanced SO much further than I did by teaching myself. DO IT.
I do have a question, though. Does anyone know what is in Volume 1 "The Basics" that I would need outside of equipment discussion? I've read the cover, and I'm not sure anything else is really relevant to someone who's advanced as far as I have on my own. Does anyone who has both Volumes 1 and 2 think I need to see what is on Volume 1? _________________

| pet575, I was in a similar situation as you at the end of last summer. I bought vol. 2 and it helped me a ton, so I just picked up the entire set on ebay for about 60 bones. I'd say about the only useful info in vol. 1 might be some of the boat driving tips such as how to drive a good double up and how to drive so as to not turn the lake into a wavey mess. They also explain the icons they use for edging positions that accompany all the tricks on the discs (i.e. tall, middle, seated) and the different types of edging for different tricks (ollie, progressive, and trip flip edging). But if you know all those things already, I would say to forget about vol. 1. |

I have been riding for 2 years and I've landed HS FS 360, TS FS 360, TS FS 540, HS BS 180, HS BS 360 and HS progressive backroll. But none of which I can do it consistently.
Recently I had a chance to take up some lessons from Bo Burton from the Wakeboard Camp. Only then I understood the importance of the basic skills such as types of edgings, body positions which were all in the Book DVD volume one. I went back and watched it and that makes so much sense. That explains why I can't land my tricks consistently coz I wasn't paying attention to the basic skills. I would recomend anyone to watch the vloume one. It is just so much easier if you have the right edgings and body positions. |

The main thing I remember getting from Volume 1 was about the cuffed position... and the previously mentioned boat driving techniques.
Volume 2 was much more helpful from what I remember and covered some of the riding stuff found in Volume 1 in more detail covering the progression from those quick points. I only watched v1 once and watched 2 multiple times.
I bought the whole set and would recommend that to most people. As far as you're concerned, you're probably going to be a little disappointed if you buy Volume 1 and watch it after going through Volume 2 already. |
