There's lots of sweet V-drives in this forum; how about a thread for all of us who are rockin' a D-drive. Open bow or closed, tower or pole; Let's see 'em!!

Here's mine: '00 Air Nautique

I like DD's better than VD's.

I find they provide more, not less room in the boat, and the tech is more solid, less moving parts, so fewer chances for problems.

Also, with the motor more in the middle weight distribution is better so getting a nice wake is easier without much fooling around with weird positions for sacs etc

abrider, i don't know about all that, but i love my ski nautique's wake at 34 mph and at 23 mph with some weight. every v-drive i've skied behind has sucked for skiing.

Good point, having a boat for one purpose, whether wakeboarding or skiing seems a little narrow. Better to have the best of all worlds.

Hmm. Interesting point - potentially all wrong though because it is such a generalization. First of all, there is more room in a V-drive if it is laid out with wraparound seating. There is more room for storage because the belly compartment tends to be longer and the storage on either side of the engine is a no brainer. So in terms of space, and assuming we're comparing a 21footer vs another 21 footer, V-drives are roomier in almost every way in this regard and I don't see how that argument is made. Although Grant West says the same thing and I respect his opinions on such things. I don't see how that argument holds up though. The tech is as solid on proven v-drive platforms as it is for d-drives. If you are referring to the v-drive transmission/coupler, I guess you are right - but that is one component. It isn't a bee hive of complexity either.

Cornut that boat is awesome. My V-drive handles like a barge. I love getting to drive the Ski Nautique instead my behemoth SAN sometimes. Even a "smaller" v-drive like a SAN handles like the Queen Elizabeth comparatively.

Anyway here is my newest direct drive. A 1971 Correct Craft Southwind that I am turning into a dive boat, big lake cruiser, and it will be used in the Ocean. A lot. I am rebuilding the interior to hold dive tanks, fishing gear, and all sorts of goodies. Parts arriving daily.

DD rock! I know you already said they don't have more room, but they do feel roomy when you stretch your legs on the engine cover.

griff, nice boat!! Here's my 2000 anniversary edition with the 99 graphics...

I agree with Erik Jernberg: in a VD there are more seating places...

I still have to do it with an I/O (Searay) Crying or Very sad , so DD or VD, it's better than mine anyway

V drives wake is not a good ski wake but can make a great wakeboard wake. Direct drive can make a great ski wake and a good wakeboard wake when weighted down. Direct drive is best for both and drives like its on rails.
My boat looks exactly like this but this is not a picture of my boat. I need to take some this summer.

I can't believe how little the Supra's have changed over the years. So awesome, and smart of them to stick with what they know has proven to be successful. Haugy you could not have picked a better tower for your boat. Completely awesome.

haugy, just a random question, but do you go to norris at all? your boat looks like one we towed to the one marina sometime in the last couple years Laughing .

with the d-drives...they are good to have if you are doing more than wakeboarding, but i'd honestly prefer the v-drive.

I agree that there are often more seats in a v-drive than a d-drive, but the size issue comes down to the engine compartment on a v-drive being usually about twice as big as the clamshell for a d-drive. This give the extra space.

Also. with a v-drive, everyone is kind of crammed up to the front of the boat, with the engine and maybe some ballast or storage in the back five feet or so. In a d-drive, we can sit spread out all around the engine, and people can put their feet up on the engine cover etc, although I really would only let my wife do that.

As for planing faster, that likely has to do with weight distribution, and the wake size/shape also has to do with weight, not v-drive vs d-drive per se. As I have said before, it makes sense to me that d-drives will give better wakes as the weight is more in the middle of the boat.

randomhero, considering I have spent more time on cruisers, I guess I just got used to the wind blowing around me. When I am slow cruising I like the wind blowing on me. Better than sticking to the seat with no breeze. I don't care if I look cool, I just like to. Cool

Didn't really mean to question whether V-drives are better than D-drives, or vice-versa, but good discussion! I think most people here will agree that VD's are the best way to go for wakeboarding, and DD's are best for folks who want to ski as well. At the same time, some people really like the V-drive wrap-around seating, while others would prefer not to have everyone's feet together. I think cost is a big factor for a lot of us as well. I kind of like the clamshell; makes a good footrest for everybody, as well as a good place to stand to get the rope on & off the tower.

But I really just wanted to see all the supa-fly 216's, X-9's, XTI's, and all the other sweet DD's out there. Randomhero, that's one awesome MC. Classic, indeed.

Let's see some more!
