Hello guys, Im wondering if i should get a new board to get some air (currently i have a heavy board with sandals - bad bad). I dont have a pylon or tower, the boat`s wake is small (18' fishing boat with 140hp outbaoard). I know that i dont have a good progressive edge technique, but i want to know if its worth to buy a board and then it will be the same (no air) because I also have to buy a pylon or a better boat.
I`m thinking about a LF Omega 139, hyperlite viscious 139. Any recomendation, Im 6'0 and 170 pounds.
Appreciate any comments

a board will really help but if it was me i would ride around on the board you have now untill you are sure you really like this sport and are "hooked"

Im just thinking that because you don't want to spend 500+ on a board and bindings and then not use them the next year. I would look into the Omega 139 like you said, seems to be a good starter board and will still suit you in the more intermediet levels

rappleby99, if you can, find a used LF trip. They're super fun boards, easy to ride on small wakes and easy to learn on.

Thanks for the info. IŽll try to find a used board, otherwise, I will buy the LF Omega 139 with Fusion or Alpha Bindings.

With my current board i just get like one foot high. I just hope to get some air if I buy a new board, even without a nice wake or pylon/tower. Also will have to work on a better technique.

rappleby99, Based on my limited experience...technique is king, all else is secondary. The best board, the biggest wake, the tallest tower won't mean squat until you learn to do your part. Good luck and hang in there. Cool

EDIT: One caveat however...those bindings will definitely hold you back. You don't have to have brand, new top of the line boots, but you absolutely need a pair of "real" bindings.

Just get your edge correct and shop around. look at rocker, width, and shape. those all factor in the air you will get.

Egde n tech is key. I was a decent beginner on an old model HL, when i got a new board it did give me alot more pop but i didn't start getting big airs until i got my progressive edge down. and your gonna break an ankle in sandals. get some good "knee high" or Real bindings. plus the bindings help you lock in an edge with the backstop support.

Dude, you don't need a pylon or tower to pull some decent air. I was getting W2W behind my dad's 1973 I/O with a 140HP in it, no ballast, and just the ski hook above the lower unit.

As others have said, you need a better board but you don't need a $500 board. What you need is something with some good bindings, a 3-stage rocker, and a no-stretch line. If you get that, and you can adjust your outboard to trim up some, you can make enough ramp out of your wake to where you'll pull more air and get hooked. Then, later on, you can upgrade the board and/or the boat when the finances allow it.

Another plus is that, even though it may not be as exciting, the boat you are riding behind is perfect for learning carving, riding switch, and pulling some surface 180's and 360's so that you can have great fundamentals when you do upgrade equipment and boat. Plus, with the adjustments mentioned above, you can slowly learn how to get better air and maybe pull some one-wake 180's/360's. If you can pull those off, or even a W2W, behind that boat, you will be 10 times better when you get behind a better boat sometime down the road.

Lastly, get good behind that thing and then find someone where you boat (or on this forum) to give you a pull behind either a WB boat or an I/O set up to throw a good wake. That's when you'll find out what it is all about.

Like everyone else said, technique is much more important than equipment. And yeah, if you do decide to upgrade the board, there's no reason to get something that's going to break the bank when you're just starting out. I was in a similar situation as you a few months ago, and didn't have a huge chunk of change to put into a board. I shopped around and managed to come across a 2006 Omega that had been demoed a couple times at a small pro shop. I picked it up bindings and all for $225. My guess is that there are some deals like that or even better still floating around, you just gotta find them. Oh, and I love the Omega, it's been a great board for me to learn on. I'd definitely recommend it.

One more time...Technique is better than equipment, but you do get to a certain point where some boards might hold you back. I would also suggest even if you decide not to get a new board, get some new actual bindings.
