| Just wondering where you get the engine, and the metal peices for the frame on a winch. How much for it as well? |

off the top of my head...
engine- www.northerntool.com
metal- anywhere/everywhere. some get it from a metal shop, others from scrap.
if you have to buy all the pieces, then you're looking at a bit more than $1k for everything it'll take to build the winch. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

| depending on how complex you want to take it there are guys out there building them for much less than 1k with all brand new parts.. start throwing in torque converters, special throttle controls and disk brakes.. then you may be looking over 1k. As scott mentioned northerntool.com is a great resource. |

It has nothing to do with how complex it is...the cost will come in how good the parts are that you use. If you build a solid frame with good engine and good components, the winch will last you a lot longer than if you skimped on stuff just to save money.
Of course, if you know how to weld or have hook-ups in that area that'll save you a bunch of money... _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

complexity has everything to do with cost... There are guys building winches with nothing more than a high quality engine, a solid frame, a couple pillow blocks, and an axle with a spool and a sprocket on it. While its not as fancy and as friendly as a more complex winch.. they work fine. the drag from the rope has enough friction that you can get away without having a brake.. you can run the throttle right off the engine as built stock, and so long as you dont mind giving up deep water starts you dont need the special clutches or torque converters. Yes if you want a winch more comperable to the grinch you may spend about 1k give or take a couple hundred bucks... but you can build a fully functional winch with quality parts for 500-700 bucks easy. They exist.. Welders are not that expensive if you provide them good plans and the metal. |

scott a,
I know someone who can weld, so that's not a problem. I know about how i want it, and what size metal etc, but do i find this at scrap yards or what? |

| WakeboardDrumma, Yea you could find it in a scrap yard.. but if you know a welder just ask him. Chances are he already has a resource he is familiar with. So long as you know him and trust him you shouldn't have to worry about him screwing you on the material costs.. |
