Hey Guys i need your opinions. I just recently found out that when i injured my knee in the summer i infact suffered a 2nd possibly 3 degree MCL sprain, torn medial meniscus and 1st degree ACL sprain. I go see the surgeon in a couple weeks but have been told that i will need a custom fit brace. I was wondering what braces you guys feel have worked the best with wakeboarding. I want one that will stay tight in the water and not migrate but is still comfortable. I also am a hockey goalie and a snowboarder so i need one that will function for those sports to. Any and all info would be much appreciated. I will be talking directly with the manufactures through the clinc i work in but i want some first hand information to. Thanks

First off, I'd be more concerned with the fact that your name is Cletis than your knee. Second.....actually that's all.

When you say you have a "grade 2 Sprain" and "grade 1 sprain" are you in fact referring to tears to your ligaments? The diagnosis is irrelevant. As far as custom fit de-rotational braces go, there are several reputable manufactures that make braces for your situation. The top three (in my opinion and that of the surgeons and orthotists that I have talked to) are Townsend Design, Donjoy, and Innovative sports. All three of their braces would work great for you. Innovative sports actually makes one that is specially designed for hockey players so you might want to look into that one. I just ordered a Townsend Design Air Townsend; it is there flagship brace. And comes very highly recommended by all I have talked to.

Custom fit braces do work very well at not allowing any rotation of you knee, thus not allowing any further injury, however they are very expensive. Even with good insurance coverage you can expect to pay as much as $1000 out of pocket. Which is not really very much when you’re looking at your 2nd or 3rd knee reconstruction.

I have added their websites so you can check them out for yourself.

Innovation Sports left me less than impressed. That "hockey brace" did let my knee rotate and I ended up doing more damage to my knee while weraing it, and the things fall apart. All the fateners for the straps cracked and broke, and the hinges got loose and twisted.

I have a CTi2, with a torn medial meniscus and partial tear to my ACL. The brace is great. It's not cheap but works wonders. I torn my knee in college wakeboarding in July and was the g.k. for the soccer team by late Sept I was back starting again. So as far as working for sports it a great brace. In the water the thing has yet to move around. I love it.
