Just read on wakeworld about Dallas Friday possibly breaking or fracturing here femur while riding in Singapore.
There is a link to a wakeboarding site in Singapore, some said how they think she broke or fractured it and I believe she was doing a whirlybird.
http://www.wakeboard.com.sg/index.php?s=cf61437deb2c31f0d9ee3e3f964224eb&showtopic=348
Quote from Singapore wakeboarding forum
"Hi there..
New member here. Anywayz I was speaking to the sports doc at the medic tent. Apparently Dallas' thigh was deformed when they pulled her out of the water. It's probably a fractured femur, or thigh bone as most would call it.
It'll roughly take about 6 months to recover. Real unfortunate."
Best wishes to Dallas and her recovery!
UPDATE: from wakeworld.

Dallas had some complications in surgery, she has fluid in her lungs and is in ICU on life support. Everyone say a prayer for her today."

You bust that femoral artery and you are in some serious trouble, hope she pulls out okay.
Oops, didn't read the whole post. But still she comes out okay _________________ Neuston Boards

i placed a call to dallas' mom, and this is what i was told.
1. her femur was shattered. they attached a plate and used part of her hip to reconstruct her femur.
2. they found 70ml of blood around her knee, which i'm guessing is "normal" considering the trauma.
3. the water in her lungs was lake water, and was discovered post-op when they noticed dallas having difficulty breathing. at that point, she was in stable condition.
4. this morning, robin (her brother) said that the doctors moved dallas to intensive care unit due to her lungs going "white." (anyone know what that means?)
5. she's given O2 and the doctors are trying to rid her lungs of the lake water. there has been some improvements from when she first entered icu.
this is all we have at this point.
please continue to keep dallas in your prayers. _________________ my demo reel

Wow, that god real bad fast. Prayes and thoughts go out to Mrs. Friday. I googles Lungs Go White, but only got results for talking about race and people actually named White. _________________ WakeSurf and Wakesurfing News |

Dallas strikes me as one tough cookie and if anybody will pull through this, it would be her. Godspeed to you Dallas and family.
I do now know what lungs going 'white' means. |

As posted by Amanda Snow at WW... Just as some clarification to some of the points on Joe's post.
"ICU nurse here.
"White" lungs on an xray means there is material in that lung that will impede airflow/ventilation. It can be mucus, fluid, etc. In her case, she probably aspirated some of the lake water and will now develop a pretty bad case of pneumonia. This is common with near-drownings. The blood around the knee is normal too. The femur holds a large amount of blood, so when shattered the blood has nothing to do but collect at a lower point. Some femur fractures require blood tranfusions.Dallas will certainly have a rocky recovery. She is healthy and young, two major points going for her. Keep us updated guys. She will be in my prayers.
A common misconception about a breathing machine or ventilator is that this is "life support". Many people on ventilators are on them to give their body a chance to recover. The machine will support respirations offering oxygen and pressure to fill the lungs. "Life support" would be a term to use if this machine was the only thing keeping her alive. I seriously doubt that is the case. "
P.S. I hope she doesn't mind me copy/pasting her post. I just thought it was informative. |

i just received a phone call from mark, the family spokesperson. dallas' condition has improved the last few hours. her left lung has improved a lot, though her right lung hasn't improved as much as the left. but, the good news is that they're both showing signs of improvement.
dallas is still in critical care but all of her neurological functions are normal. she's heavily sedated, but resting comfortably.
robin sr. is due to land in 30 minutes where he'll meet robin jr. with great news!
the family is aware of all the support for dallas and the friday family and they appreciate them greatly.
keep the prayers coming. _________________ my demo reel

dang thats horrible, i hope the best for her. I remeber when i broke my femur, the main concer was if the femural artery has been cut, which cause the lungs to fill with blood. If its only lake water then I assume she did not puncture her femural artery. I hope for her the best, and wakeboarding needs her to recover. _________________ stay clean, like me

Brutal, sounds like the end of her tour domination if not career. I hope all turns out well. _________________

jryoung - from the pic i posted a plate and some screws isnt bad. Of course my femur didnt shatter, but im sure with good rehab she will be back on the water, i know i am. Its a bone, if it heals properly it will be even stronger than previously. Best of luck to her. _________________ stay clean, like me

What's the deal with Copeland challenging Dallas's victory?
When a fellow boarder is down and injured, even if the title and cash are on the line, there is a level of respect that should be upheld.
Poor form show a lack of respect.
Get well Dallas. |

From today's Orlando Sentinel:
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_local_news/2006/10/email_from_dall.html
E-mail from Dallas Friday's mother
posted by Roger Simmons on Oct 4, 2006 11:13:03 AM
Executive Sports Editor Lynn Hoppes received an e-mail this morning from the mother of wakeboarder Dallas Friday (left).
Dallas, as you probably know by now, is in a Singapore hospital after a wakeboarding accident this past weekend. Here's what Dallas' mother Darla wrote to Hoppes:
I am able to write now and I am doing much better now that it appears Dallas is on the road to recovery. I want to thank you for all your thoughts and prayers these past few days.
The latest on Dallas is that she is breathing 60% on her own. They are going to take x-rays tomorrow morning of her lungs and may be able to take the tube out of her left lung. The right lung has shown significant improvement. In the next couple days if she continues to progress, they are going to take her out of her sedated state to see if she can breathe on her own. However, they will leave her breathing tube in when they bring her out of the sedated state to make sure she can breathe 100% on her own instead of removing the breathing tube and finding she cannot and have to sedate her again and put the tube back down her throat.
They apologized to Robin Sr. for having to tie her down but every time she hears her father's voice her body begins to flail. This says to me she wants to be cognizant and come out of the state she has been put in. Robin Sr. told them, "you don't know my daughter and that when she does come out of the sedated state they are going to need a straight jacket to keep her down!"
She is still in critical condition but is stable and please keep praying that she continues to progress.
Many thanks to all of you for your faithful support of Dallas.
