So boats usually have motors out of vehichles such as corvettes, trucks, whatever but the hours don't match up.

You can have a vehichle that has 140,000 wich would be more than 100,000 hours but if that motor was in a boat it would be toast. How does that work? I realize they aren't exactly the same but they have to be pretty close, yet they differ soo much in amount of time they can run.

140,000/100,000 means that your average speed would be 1.4 miles per hour, I don't think most cars or boat spend much time at that speed, let alone a majority of their life...

A boat engine has the same stresses on it as a truck does pulling a decent sized trailer up a fairly steep grade hill.

2000 hours at an average of 28 mph= 56,000 miles, but those are HARD miles.

I'm not sure I really follow your logic anyways, is it all some kind of conspiracy? Laughing

The hours do match up if you take into consideration the stress that boat motors go through, most motors don't spend their lives at 3k+ RPM's, where as boats do.

Yah, you don't run your boat arround at 1/3 of its maximum speed usually.

Yeah .... this has a lot to do with the extra stress that the engines in our boats are subjected to. How much time do you spend at full throttle in your car versus your boat?

Does your car have a throttle? I was thinking about that one day when I was with I guy who had a foot peddle in his boat. A throttle with a a thumb shifter and a handbrake out in front of it. Then you could put your seat sideways and have something on the floor so you could steer by edging. That would be totaly awsome, right up until the when you swerve in front of an 18 wheeler and die. But then, hey, you died having fun. How many people can say that? Nobody, of course.

Just like Dragon88 said... basically the answer to your question is because a boat engine is always under load.

Engine manufactures suggest oil changes on boats 50 hrs and on trucks 100 hours.

My 06 Supra 21V Promo boat has about 150 hours and under normal running conditions would have changed it 3x. I had 1 extra at 25 because of a new break in oil change.

so if I were to coralate engine hours on a boat to mileage it would be 150 hours = 15,000 miles (3x5000)

Bobby ..... the first time I read that I thought ... why not get a motorcycle? But that sounds like a fun idea. Kind of reminds me of the little motorized scooters the kids all ride around here.

Yes, my car does have a throttle, it is attached to a stepper motor which is controlled by the ECU which in turn gets its input from the pedal. The throttle is the little valve in the intake that controls how much air an engine gets. How it's controlled is up to the application.

On our lake, there are a quite a few boats (70's jetboats) that have pedals to control the throttle. I would think that that would get quite annoying after a while.

Well ... anyway ... I've rambled off topic too long.

jjaszkow, the reason you wouldn't get a motorcycle is because those already exist. Very Happy Have you ever riden a motorized scooter. If you get the ones that go 40 mph, those things are actually kinda fun. The only problem is they're ridiculously hard to drive and that if you hit a pebble arround a corner, you are done. But if you know what you're doing and are willing to risk killing yourself, the turning circle is pretty good.

OK, yes, I guess your car does have a throttle, but it doesn't have the thing you call a throttle in a boat (would a boat have 2 throttles or is the second one technichally called a throttle regualtor or something?).

And yah, a pedal sounds annoying, even if you didn't have to control speed with that. But a manual transmission like on those MBs sounds like fun, especially if you had the stick on the left side and the throttle on the right. A very unique challenge. When you went to pick up your boarder, you'd have turn the wheel, push down the throttle, upshift and straighten out the wheel, pull back the throttle and downshift, and then make sure you don't miss your skier. Otherwise you would have to pick them up in low gear, which is, of course, not cool. Very Happy
