I'm getting Shoulder Surgery on the 11th of October for the same thing.
Geoff on this board had it done last year and has nothing but good things to say about it. Riding after the surgery for him was WAY better. I'm hoping for the same results... _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

I had pretty major reconstructive shoulder surgery in '98.. 10 months later I was riding again... after a 7 year layoff (due to work/life, not health) - I'm back on the board and the shoulder is still holding up.
Just remember to REALLY stick to your rehab and you'll be good.
Good luck! |

Strength and flexability are the best forms of prevention. Also how many times have you (just like me) gone out and jumped in for your first pull completely cold??. Just as with any other sport we should all be stretching before our first run. Good luck with the shoulder. The harder you work at the rehab the better and more fully you will recover.

Not for a shoulder, it's one of the more vunerable joints of the body. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

gonna have to agree with her on that one..... you really dont want to have anything happen your shoulder area i messed up my collar bone a while back and i can feel it when im wakeboarding when im putting pressure on it because its now miss-shapped i also have a hard time swim stroking with that arm it'll pop a lot didnt realize how much your arm relies on your collar bone to be functioning correctly when i broke it couldnt lift my whole arm at all |

Strengthening the muscles around any joint will stabilize the joint making the joint inherently stronger. Flexability in this context refers not to an unstable joint, as in loose ligments, But to having muscle flexabiliy or perhaps better termed extensability as to not reach the end of a muscles range of motion and causing a strain or a tear.
Yes the shoulder is inherently unstable due to being held inplace by soft tissue only and being a multi axis joint, but having those muscles and tendons, in the rotator cuff especially, be as strong as possible will lessen the likelyhood of injury or decrease the severity if an injury occurs. You can't really do much about the strength of the ligaments except for the fact that exercise will increase the blood flow and allow them to be healthier. (the blood supply sucks to ligaments) But not having them get stressed because they are protected by strong muscles and having the ability to move through a full range of motion does decrease the likely hood of injury to the joint.
You could also add in that overall flexability will reduce the stress placed on a given joint by allowing for greater overall movement.
Hopefully this clarifies my earlier statment.
Edit to add: Here's an excellent link to exercises and stretches for the shoulder.
