Is adding perfect pass to a boat a do it yourself project, or probably not?

Boat would be a 2000 Malibu Sunsetter.

depends on how handy you are with your hands..you need to hook it up to the engine and make a place for it in your dash and i bet its pretty hard.. so if your no good with your hands i would say get someone to do it, you dont want to hurt the engine or anything Smile

Not to mention you must drill into the bottom of your boat and install a paddle wheel... unless you already have one...

I've heard quotes of $1200 for perfect pass installed? Does that seem reasonable/accurate? How about just purchasing the PP it's self, what's average cost? I know some of the PP' are more advanced and can save some rider's settings, but I would just want a basic unit. One that would be mounted into the dash, and not sitting on the dash. I've seen those and don't like the looks of that.

thekpan, You might want to research this rather than throw facts and opinion into the air. Damage engine? huh?!! "make" a place in the dash?? you just slot out the old MPH gauge!

biglouie, It's straightforward. you'll need to remove your speedo (2 bolts normally) and slot in the PP screen. You'll need to undo 2 bolts on your throttle linkage and install the PP throttle wire to it, hang the servo off the exhaust manifold (all bits included) and then drill a hole in the hull to place the paddle wheel.

Generally takes 2-3 hours to do and is all run through in step by step instructions. pretty much anyone can do it with little to no engine knowledge. The instructions are full of pics and useful tips etc... and PP are always on the end of the phone should you have any difficulty.

There's really nothing intimidating about doing it.. i'd put it on par with installing your own tower.

I've now installed 3 of them and never had a single problem.

Also yes you can save your name in the system so it stores your prefferred speed etc.. its all included in Wakeboard pro which is honestly the one worth going for.

Yea, why would someone comment on this topic if they have never installed PP, or probably never purchased one?

I purchased and installed PP myself on my old 1997 MC 205. If you are a little handy you can do it yourself. The instructions are excellent and they will have insturctions specific to your boat, and their customer service is awesome so if you have a question just call.

The wb model which you should get is about 1100 by itself, so 1200 installed would be a good deal. For $100 bucks I would have them install it.

Do a search for the perfect pass company, they are in Canada, and talk to them.

Partyb, Good advice.

I am UK based so am not 100% on this but hasn't the price dropped at all? Is it still over 1000?! Yikes if so! Still well worth it but I'd guess with all these new manufacturer based systems coming stock that PP would be treading water a little.

biglouie, I was in my boat today and never turned the thing off.. it really is a great tool.

biglouie, wow, I would have thought it'd have dropped a little by now.. either way.. its still the best aftermarket system around and well worth the investment if you plan on keeping your boat for another season or so.

Remember.. it can easily be removed and transferred to another boat so long as you stick with the same brand engine.

thekpan, Nah you are correct. The extra 100 was for fitting.. which I really think is very reasonable. I'd still do it myself though Twisted Evil

thekpan, Hmm don't mean to alarm but if you have gas and any water coming off/out of the engine thats a bad thing.

You should only get Water in the bottom of the boat (The Bilge Area - from your wetsuits and gear etc.. and possibly your packing gland if you have a direct drive or V drive boat). There may be some oil from previous poor maintenance. If its looks oily stick your finger in it and rub them together... if whatever it is gives an oily/slippery feel and doesn't evaporate after a few secs then it ain't gas.

If its oil don't worry but it wouldn't do any harm to give the bilge a clean up. If its gas.. get your rig to a service center ASAP. Same if there is water coming off the engine block. - a part of your colling system is likely loose.

thekpan, Murky is fine... gas rich is bad! Check it out next time your out. some gas tanks have been known to split or crack.

it would be better to get someone to do it for you, way to much work. the smartest way to go is to get it if it is an option when you buy your boat. we didn't and now we wish we did, but we might get it installed. you dont only need the experience and knowledge to hook it up, you have to have the tools and the guts to dirll holes in your boat. Hmm we already agreed that hooking it up manually is not hard at all. and only requires basic tools and standard DIY knowledge. Confused

Price not really dropping b/c I think they keep upgrading (?). Also, you can install it aftermarket, but it's not really "aftermarket."

You mentioned "with all these new manufacturer based systems coming stock" you would think the price would go lower. However, the manufacturer's install the Perfect Pass system, it's not some new system developed by MC or Nautique or whatever. They buy from PP and put it in there boats.

Partyb, No. Many, such as MC are abandoning PP as much as poss. They now have their own Speed control system which they clain is far superior to PP.

In this case it IS a new system.

I just installed PP Pro on my PS205 a few weeks ago and it was very simple and straight forward. It took 4 hrs to install, including speedo wheel, clean up, and I was off to the lake. I picked mine up for around $900 on discount from boardersparadise.com. Average quote in the Sac area for install was $400. I'm glad I saved the $$$ and did it myself.

I have had no problems and I highly recommend the system.

Does anybody have any experience with perfect pass cruiser? (the RPM only version) It holds the engine at a set rpm, does not have a display, and does not use a paddle wheel, but its half the price.

Nobody uses the rpm model for wakeboarding. Don't get it. The rpm's will change constantly for a given speed depending on amount of weight in boat, people, etc.

I use the RPM when the boat is weighted, works a lot better than the speedo PP when the boat is fully loaded. But I have the Wakeboard Pro, so I can't comment on the RPM only version (but I assume it's the same program as in the pro).

And setting up PP in your boat is super easy, I did it no problem.

I don't have perfect pass now, but I use the rpm gauge to hold the riders speed rather then watching the speedo because the rpm gauge is more accurate. Only problem is that its hard to get the rpm to stay at a certain value using the throttle stick. (within 200 rpm). How accurate is the RPM mode on perfect pass?

Chuter, RPM is generally held within about 20 RPMS unless cornering or hitting really rough water etc..
