Actually Air Raleys on the cable are just as simple as behind a boat. Ive only been to OWC once (not my first time behind a cable though) and that was in august and i stomped one off the turn nearest to the dock. You just have to commit, cut correctly (slightly differently than a boat) and release. I saw a bunch of guys throwin them and i talked to one of them and he was way nice and explained to me how to do it step by step....from the body position, to cut, to release and i stomped one on my third try. I did take one nasty spill on the second try though, but sh*t happens man.

Here's some tips for doing a raley on cable:
| Quote: | Learning an Air-Raley
by Mike Ferraro and Marcus Friedrich
The Air-Raley is the spectacular signature move of wakeboarding. Founded almost 10 years ago on a cable in South Florida, Darin Shapiro was the first rider, who transformed it to the boat. Why does a Air-Raley work? It’s about releasing pressure. You are cutting heelside and just before you take of you have to increase that heelside pressure until the cable finally snaps you up in the air. In this article we will show you an easy 2 way method to avoid painful crashes and to get the feeling for an Air-Raley on the cable.
1st Step: Getting Started
To get the feeling for the pull of the rope it is useful to first try the move without a board. The cable offers a good opportunity by standing on the starting dock with nothing else than the handle in your hand. When the carrier comes, try to "lean" against the rope. We are talking of a "drop – in" which is the most important part of a Raley. "Dropping in" means that you have to lean your upper body back against the pull of the rope. You increase the pressure before you release it. Be aware that your arms are out and your knees have to be slightly bent. The moment, when the carrier pulls you of the dock, try to avoid jumping. Let the carrier pull you out in the air. Keep your chest up, your arms straight and your shoulders leveled. That will allow you fly like Superman the first 3m in the air. Your legs have to be behind you. On the highest point, start pulling your arms in. The most important thing is that your chest has to be up at that point. While pulling your arms in, try to bring your legs in front of you. To avoid injuries, keep your legs close together. The ideal position while you are entering the water is about 5m away from the starting dock, which is like sitting in a chair. Do that many times and let your friends watch it. The most important things to remember are:
1)Let the carrier pull you out, don’t jump
2)Your chest and your head have to be up and your shoulders leveled.
3)Bring your arms in at the highest point and your legs in front of you.
If you can do all that, you are ready for the next step.
2nd Step: On The Water
Riders with goofy stance can use the corners to do that trick, regular stance riders do it by making a curve pointing to the operator and then going to the other side of the cable (obvious they have to swim longer to go back). The most important thing with that rope is edging. You won’t make a Raley when you are unable to edge your board heelside. The whole story is about "loading the rope" while you are edging, not about speed. The edging is not a hard pull, but an increase of staying on the edge. Just before you release the pressure by letting the board behind you you have to lean a little harder. This is the "drop- in" that you learned from the first step when you waited till the carrier pulls you out of the dock. To get the timing right is the secret of a Raley. The best point to release is when you feel the cable snapping back. Most people wait too long, so remember Step 1 and the feeling you had. That will help you get the feeling right. If you don’t get it , go back to step 1 and do another 5 tries. When you feel the snap, let the rope pull you out of the front and the board behind you. You have to relax you arms and legs. Let the cable pull you up in the air. On most other wakeboarding moves you see your board, on an Air-Raley it stays behind you. Don’t go too big at the beginning! You will be surprised that you don’t need a lot of pulling and tension in the line to make that move. The faster you release and go up in the air when you learn it, the better.
Remember the 2 things:
1)Let your arms out and keep your chest up. Don’t be afraid of the height.
2)At the highest point pull your arm in and down towards your knees while keeping your chest up this will help you to bring the board back under you.
Should I use a wakeskate to lean a Raley?
The problem with a wakesakte is, that you are unable to get the most important part of doing a Raley: The right edge and the "drop-in". With a wakeskate you can just generate speed, but that won’t help you with getting up in the air. We never encourage students using a wakeskate to learn a Raley.
Does a shorter rope help to learn?
Yes, definitely. You can do a step in between by using a slalom rope which is 11m or 12m long or simply by making you normal rope shorter. Don’t try to pull you up in the air, better use your edge to get the snap from the cable.
What is the next step?
A Raley offers great opportunities to do a bunch of cool looking air tricks. The next step could be a Krypt, which is a Raley to Fakie or a Blind Judge (Raley to Blind), one of the most admired moves in Wakeboarding. You can add a 360 at the end of the Raley (311) or try to grab you Raley (Hootchie Glide or OHH)..
Trouble Shooting:
1-Catching your toeside edge:
A-chest down while pulling in the handle
B-looking down
2-Not getting enough air:
A- not edging hard and long enough
B-not releasing the load quick enough, you don’t "drop-in" at the right time.
3-Twisting:
A-not keeping handle and shoulders leveled
when releasing the load
4- Rope snaps out of my hand in the air, I end up doing a front flip
A- You are edging too hard with too much speed
B- You let the rope go in the air , keep it in your hands
C- You are pulling you legs in, keep the out all the time |
Here are a few pics as well.... they're also posted somewhere else on this site.
