This question has plagued me for quite some time now. It doesn't make sense to me that a bee will use stinging as a defence mechanism, but then soon die because their stingers fall out. Seems like a poor way to defend yourself, if you end up dead in the end either way...
My friend just walked into the office complaining about how they just received their first bee sting, so we got talking about it, and finally decided to look it up...
Apparantly a bee's stinger is an undeveloped sex organ?!

| Yeah, and their stinger is attached to their entrails, so when the stinger gets ripped out guess what else comes with it? Yeah. That usually results in the dying part... |

| I might like to add that AFAIK bees usually have greater numbers than wasps or hornets. Maybe it had something to do with them being able to develop and multiply more quickly than their cousins because of a simpler anatonomy? |

The bees are only trying to fend off intruders, and in some cases if you step on them, etc. They don't care if they die, as long as they make the intruder leave.

Look at it this way you can go down to your local Porn Shop ( or Adamandeve.com ) and buy all different shaped, colored & sized strap-ons for a replacement.... from what the guys on this site say.
