I have a 19' Rinker 5.7L runabout that I've owned for about a month now. Whenever I have 4+ people and gear in the boat, it rolls to the left really bad when accelerating. It feels seriously unsafe actually. I talked to my servicing dealer and they said there is normally a slight lean to the left because that is the torque side of the engine. He asked about a hydrofoil and I told him that I had one on it. He told me that is what makes it so bad. But, I see other boats with hydrofoils or whaletails on their boats and heard that it helps plane quicker. I haven't taken the boat out without the hydrofoil yet but will check it out this Friday. Anyone know about this?
Oh and yes, I have the weight distributed evenly, even overloading the right side to compensate. |

What type of hydrofoil. I had a sting ray on my 20' Bayliner V8 and loved it. Helped plane out faster and keep plane at lower speeds. The downside was it leaned BAD in corners. It would really turn the boat up on side. I never really minded since it still turned, but it scared new passengers.
I just bought a 19' Rinker and it needs some help getting on plane. I plan on putting a hydrofoil on but was doing some research first. Smart tabs sound great, just wish i could ride in a boat with them first to experience first hand. I ended up buying another sting ray hydrofoil and i'll put it on tommorrow. When I was shopping, I noticed that the sting ray hydrofoil has extra tabs you can bolt to the bottom of it to help torque steer. If you have a sting ray hydrfoil you might be able to add these to help the issue.
On a seperate note, do you know if your 19' came factory with a V8? If so what year and is it 2 or 4 barrel, or EFI? _________________ Drive it like you stole it. |

| Is your hydrofoil perfectly centered and straight on your stern drive. Most of them come with templates to install yourself, but if you don't mount it perfectly centered or exactly straight, it will list the boat to one side as you accelerate. Under normal conditions, it shouldn't lean much when accelerating in a straight line. But it will lean big time in hard turns, like Gobeer said. |

I should say try to take them off and see how it goes...
Guess Friday will be a good day for the test

I have experienced this same problem with a fish and ski. The main problem with my boat turned out to be the prop. The prop I had created too much stern lift and not enough bow lift. This causes the boat to plane out faster, but it also forced the bow down at slower speads. This caused the boats weight to be on the deeper "v" of the boat. I suspect that your hydrofoil is lifting your stern too much and doing the same thing. The boat is designed to run at speed on the back 1/3 of the boat. If your hydrofoil lifts the stern too much and you are unable to trim past that lift the boat will be running on the full length of the bottom, causing the problem you are having. Your boat may just not be able to power up on to the rear 1/3 of the boat with the hydrofoil and that many people on board. I hope this helps, and let us know how it comes out after you try a few things. |

| Wow, thats pretty interesting! Never would have thought that. I guess that's why hydrofoils come in different sizes? Maybe he has the wrong size. |

dkent18450, My friend's boat has the same problem; They tried everything and have th problem down to the prop - either you have a right turning one and should have a left, or vice versa i think (I don't think the pitch is the issue, but it might be). _________________ Impossible is not a a fact. arof if he has a left turning one and should have a right turning one the easiest way to notice that you have the wrong prop would be that the boat would be going backwards when in front gear and forward when in reverse.
dkent, you obviously have a right-hand turning prop and that causes the torque to the left. This is really the reason why the driver allways sits on the right side, to weigh it down to compensate for the torque. Try to weigh it down even more on the right side of the boat. Does it only lean while accellerating?
Is it a sterndrive? Perhaps you could put a torque tab on it?
Also called torque tamer ( www.bobsmachine.com ).

I have the same problem with my I/O. Its a Deep V hull so its super sensitive to weight and the torque of the prop. I use weight, (speaker box, sand bags) to counter the lean. I also installed trim tabs on my boat so I dont have to move people around while cruising. _________________ WakeSurf and Wakesurfing News |
