i dont really understand wat u did.. u cut the handle off the rope to make it shorter and know u need to tie it back? i would just make a loop on both ends of the rope and then feed the handle threw the loop of the long rope and then back thrrew the loop on the end of the rop attached to the handle... i dont know wat the knots are called, just make sure the loops arnt going to tighten when u pull it. i hope u know wat i mean i could try to explain better mabyue if u dont understand, or mabye get a picture...
hope it helped.

as in u literally cut it off? if so, i would like to laugh at u, or did u just take off one of the extensions by sliding it off or just let it hang loose? please god tell me u didn't cut the actual rope with like scissors...
