Progressive edging "loads the line" meaning that it adds tension to the line, and keeps tension on the line. The difference between progressive edging and holding an edge is that progressive edging builds the tension and keeps it on the line as opposed to just adding it all at once.

Setting an edge and holding it will only produce line tension at the start and once your body is moving along that line, the line tension will quickly reduce. (concentrate on feeling the tension in your hands)

The progressive edge is the best way, as you do not need perfect timing.

You could produce great pop by coasting in and then throwing a huge edge at the last moment, but timing it and getting on the edge reliabily would be hit and miss for a newbie.
