| I am a professional martial artist and was wanting to start wakeboarding but i would like to get an idea of how common injuries are, how severe they are and which body parts are injured most often? As due to my martial arts i cannot risk an injury. |

| the most frequent "injury" for me and most of my friends is like a mild concussion. most of the time we just get the wind knocked out of us though. i have heard of some pretty bad injuries, but never seen them happen |

Stay within your limits -- in other words, don't go trying inverts and tricks your first time out. Seems most injuries, snowboard and wakeboard alike come from more advanced riders.
Common WB injury I've read is Knees and Ankles. For a newb, that's where I suggest making sure the wakeboots you have on fit well. Also, if you are able to take a lesson or get coached somewhere, it would be money well spent to learn and get the basics down and keep the injury risk low.
Which discipline of martial arts are you into? |

AndrewStrang, you want your bindings to be snug, not loose and not to tight but nice and snug.
you are the only person who will be able to determine this when your lacing up.
as for do you want your feet to come out, generally you would rather not but if they do its not so bad, but you want both feet to come out, big injuries lie in one footing releasing and the other foot staying in.
but like everyone said, stay within your limits, dont try anythign stupid and put your hands out infront when you fall to break the water _________________ "One day Parks will teach me how to be a Professional Chase Boat Driver." |

| yea. one of the most improtant things is to have snug bindings. when i lived in mn, i went snowboarding and one of my friends fell and only one of his feet came out of the bindings. his knee was pretty screwed. i think that it would be alot worse on a wakeboard though. i think that you would be ok if you just know wut your doing and that you have good equip |

Im a newb at Wakeboarding and i thought i was going to face-plant alot becasue it was my first time. I never did face-plant and whenever i fell, I i fell forward-----I would turn to my back and fall, I would basically glide on the water and wouldnt hurt myself. But my friend isnt that coordinated and fell on his face a couple times at high speeds, BUT he managed to get right back up and try it again. We both learned that falling on your back really breaks your fall. Hope this helps and makes you want to get into wakeboarding. _________________ Blood is thicker than water. Family comes first! |

I've seen many people blow out an ear drum from smaking the side of their head on the surface , that's probably the most common. _________________ Neuston Boards

| yeah most of the pain is very temporary like a belly flop or face plant that might give you a bloody nose or somthin but anything like those go away in a matter of no time |

just dont go very fast and dont do anything stupid you'll be fine, and make sure your feet arent going to come out... that can cause some major problems if they do, specifically if one comes out and one doesnt _________________ Obrien Oasis 137 w/ Link Bindings

I also have a friends who blew her ear drum out....it was killer pain for her...but shes fine now. I think u can get helmets to prevent that though. |

if i spend a day going hard - i usually have whip-lash from the falls. for example - i had 5 good runs in the past 2 days - today my body aches, whiplash included. i also got a big bruise on my back from the board smacking me on a fall. was it worth it - absolutely. will the pain stop me - not a chance. if my vacation didn't end, i'd have been out there today and the rest of the weekend. _________________ you have the right to remain silent, so shut the hell up! |

burkemw, how do they look like & where do u get the ear pads?
Ear drum blow out - my friend blew out his 3x and now he has a growth/water bubble in his brain. They said it is caused by infection "perhaps" linked to seawater got in from his broken ear drum. He doesnt ride anymore. |

| it all depends on what you do. For me, when i try spins and if i dont get the handle pass or i underrotate, it hurts and knocks you around. But nothing horrible. But if I do flips and underrotate or land w/o the rope it really doesnt hurt. |

ive been wakeboarding two years now and ive taken ALOT of falls but nothing too bad sore ribs, face, butt, knees, arms, and hands. but from what i can tell just let the water take you dont try and stop the crash, that is once your down, just flip and spin with the water fighting it only hurts worse!!! _________________ Maxxxxxx |

Something I learned from my snowboarding days, keeping the front foot at 5+ degree angle can cause some major pain.
If you are ever un-lucky enoungh to catch a front edge hard, there a possibility of the board digging in hard enoungh to bend you into a pretzel, beacuse the front foot is angled, this usaully cause all sorts of strechting to ligaments and tendons that do not like to be stretched. The rear foot at zero degrees, is perfectly fine.
Took me about 6 months before i could stretch my leg out fully without it causing sweilling...
Not sure if this is possible on a wakeboard, just someting to keep in mind when setting your board up. |

wow blowing out your ear drum sounds bad..what speed does that usually happen at? ive been riding over a year now and the worst fall has only knocked the wind out of me. but my bindings are usually really loose so that my feet come out every time i fall and then i just slip my feet back in apparently thats really bad....i think ill tighten mine up next time! |

zerobane, beginners usually set their bindings up to have the back foot square and the front foot pointed forward. This can really mess up your knees if your going big, but most people that go big have their feet set up symmetrical for riding switch. Having your toes pointed too far out or too far in can cause some serious knee problems if you come down hard. _________________
