I have read this thread a few times now and I think that it has tons of great info in it. As a new-b there is tons of info here. Rocket I agree with what you are saying about the pro’s can take short cuts. I compete in karate tournaments and there are tons of short cuts that I now do because of the experience that I have got over the last 16yrs of competing. I find that I need just a couple of thing to work on at a time. What is the top 4 thing that I should focus on to get more pop. I usually get around 3 feet of air. Thanks for the help everyone. Smile

I don't know how many people do what I do (I read one similar experience in the thread). I can progressive edge and I think I hold it pretty well. I kind of stand up but I don't really know if I'm doing it all that well because I've been told that I come off edge but I look like that guy who does the 180 in the sequence. (Not the same height but same board position and body position at the wake.) My biggest problem is that when I get "launched" off the wake I always have a problem where my knees get driven/sucked into my chest. I'm used to doing tricks on snow skis and snowboard and I usually pull the board or skis up into my chest to do tricks. The problem with wakeboarding is that this action is probably why I am losing any pop I gained from edging. I would just stop doing it but when I keep them straight I feel as if it is a natural tendency for my body to do a Raley and that is something I do not wish to happen.

This is a really great thread loaded with information--I had actually read this thread before my last wakeboarding trip and was able to use it to start jumping W2W HS consistently for the first time (still working improving the progressive edge and on TS W2W). Anyway, I had started another thread but was referred back to this one--just wondering if anyone has any good tips to help me get more pop--I feel like I lost a little height but gained the distance need to go W2W and am at least landing in the smooth downsize of thw wake now. I know I need to stay on edge more at the wake--from the video you can see I definitely come off edge. Thanks for all the tips -- any comments on the video are appreciated!

Think progressive edge, as in a nice sweeping arch toward the wake, don't cut in and race to it. Then think, "show the bottom of your board to the people in the boat as you go OFF the wake" Not just to, or at the wake. The edge while going off the wake seems to be the key. Most people will have plenty of edge up to the wake, then flatten out. DON"T DO THAT.

EDGE OFF THE WAKE
EDGE OFF THE WAKE
EDGE OFF THE WAKE
EDGE OFF THE WAKE

The concept of edging off the wake didn't really click in my mind, it was the phrase 'showing your graphics to the people in the boat' that clicked. Just do that. Forget about "edging", just show the graphics on the bottom of your board to the people in the boat, through the cut, and off the wake.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what you mean. I'm thinking once you have edged off the wake and are in the air, you are already through it. What am I missing?

Ok, this thread was great, I have never really thaught about how I am edging. But I guess I don't go progressive enough and that I am bent in my body and don't stand tall at the right time.
I'll be going wakeboarding tonight and we'll see if keeping this in mind will make any difference.

derek_lukasik, those pictures are both of raley based tricks. dont use them to help u unless u are going to be attempting a ralley. from what ive seen, u start to throw your board back off of the wake(correct me if im wrong any1)

from what ive seen (from the local good guy to pro wakeboarders) they let up on their edge a little bit before hitting the wake. the edge is to give you speed, and leting up and pumping a little will get you the height. i think that it is a perfect ballance of speed and standing tall that maximises your height. i say mess around with it. Raley-based tricks supposedly require excellent progressive edge technique. And if that means edging all the way up the wake, then how did it work out so well for the dude doing the S-bend?

I think this just comes down to style/preference. I continue to try the edge all the way up thing every once in a while. But it still hasn't worked for me. Maybe one day it will. Anyway, I think we're beating a dead horse at this point...

when i was trying to clear the wake last year my dad told me to take a progessive edge then try to be edging so hard that when you hit the wake you slip out or you do a boardslide on the wake. if your really trying to slip out then you should be standing tall it would be easier to slip out if you used your legs to pushthe board out from under you. but you wil never slip out when you try this the fins will keep you in the water. i would say for beginers its probably best to go out about 20 feet . until you get a stronger edge. standing tall is very very important you dont see pros having a seated position when they hit the wake and also take a look at the progessive wake jump on this site if you go frame by frame you can see how tall he stands when he goes off the wake

ok, PEOPLE raley cuts are COMPLETELY diffrent than progressive cuts... when you go to do a raley cut, you have to build up speed VERY EARLY AND VERY QUICKLY... you progressively get faster, but you HAVE to let the handle out and stand tall to lay your body out.. if you have the handle in there is too much slack to pull yourself back in... that is why you guys should not be trying to learn w2w by looking at raley information..
for example... this is a video of a raley cut, it is VERY diffrent from a progressive edge you guys on here talk about...
http://www.wakepics.com/img/19773

allright, ill copy what i put in the other thread.. you DONT HAVE TO CUT LIKE A MADMAN!! as long as your cut is slightly progressive you will go wake 2 wake, you dont have to have your ass on the water, and if you do, you are either cutting WAY too hard (if you are doing it in good form) or you are just bending your knees and not actually cutting the way you need to in order to pop off with speed

if you slingshot(all distance no height), you are edging too hard and fast for your ability level... dont go out as far, and dont try to come in as fast, just try to keep the line tension AT THE GREATEST right at the top of the wake... kind of begin to drift in, then gradually edge harder, and give a little extra edge at the trough... if you exagerate this edge in the trough it will FORCE you to stay on edge the whole way up the wake so you learn how it is supposed to feel.. after you get a feel for it you can ease things up so you can get consistant and learn "if i want to do a wake to wake jump i have to edge this hard" and "i want to take my indy grab out in the flats i have to edge this hard" and eventually "i want to pop straight up on my 3, so i have to edge this hard and pop right here on the wake"

here is a video of me i took last year showing people how to do a wake 2 wake jump, if you notice my board doesnt really flatten it, i pop up and pull the handle down and towards my waist... check it

what a differnece it is between what you do and other videos
ur way looks so much easier cuz your legs were relatively straight the whole time and there was no cut hard then straighten out
thanks for the tips

Peace

wtbamoomba, good explanation and thanks for the video. Your video definitely shows the results of building a progressive edge and not letting off at the wake, like mine did. I am going out this weekend and will try to drift in a bit longer and not cut so hard at the beginning but build an edge and make sure I am on edge all the way up the wake! I think last time out, I traded speed for pop to get W2W and I am hoping I can put them both together this time!

after you learn how to clear the wake wtih a progessive edge you will probably have alright pop but it probably wont be that good at first. getting good pop and a stonger edge is something taht you will always be able to get better at and it will come in time. you will know when you do your first progessive HS w2w, it will feel different than non progessive w2w, but dont expect to get 10 feet of pop on your first one. it takes time and lots of practice to get good pop.

Yea same here, I'm really thinking that whole "belly up" thing is gonna be vital. I've got the extend part down but I just don't think my cuts as powerful as it should be, even tho its still progressive. Im psyched.
