I'm wondering... how good do you have to be to be able to get a sponership to a shop. [/i]

Pretty good, 5 or more inverts, lots of switch, spins, 360 is like the lowest you need to have down, consistent riding, style, lots of times you need to be able to hit sliders, off axis spins...late spins, alot of stuff, you need to be very consistent and usually it takes a long time to get a shop sponsor

Chocolate Sauce, not most of the shops around here. I know a guy whose sponsored who can only do 180s. Usually around here you have to have a 360, a couple inverts, and maybe a 5. More importantly you gotta show your stuff at comps.

around here is hardcore, most of the time a shop sponsor isnt worht it, especially of your young, its way too much pressure, just go wakeboard and have fun, it will screw up your thoughts on wakeboarding if your sponsored too young..

for one, you need to know how to spell the word sponsor. Rolling Eyes

Chocolate Sauce, 5 or more inverts? more like 10 or 12.

and i agree with LFADAM, you need to have good results at competitions to show that you can handle pressure from other riders that you are competing with.

ohio_wake_2008, Geez...10 or 12? With that many, you can get a board sponsor (regional rider, not full out pro). Seriously. I have friends who can do HS Backrolls, R2Rs HS and TS, Tantrum, Frontroll, Elephants, Scarecrows, 2 handle pass inverts minimum (Tootsies and R2B) and 540s and 1 720 who are sponsored by CWB and one by LF.

My shop sponsor called be this winter, and then I could do 3 flips, TS and HS 3's, and a HS 5. It probably has to do most with competitions because I did pretty good in competitions last year.

I got a shop sponsor when I had 1 mobe, a couple raley variations, about 6 stock inverts and solid switch, grabbed, and blind 3s(not all at once). And solid contest results. Make sure the shop you are looking at is cool, cause if they pressure you on contests and stuff its not worth it.

LFADAM, i've got 17 total inverts landed, and about 14 perfected and i've e-mailed a bunch of companies and get nothing Confused

i don't do spins that much but i can land a ts 5 in when there is enough weight in the boat.

ohio_wake_2008, well thats your problem. If you have SEVENTEEN inverts, you should be spinnin like crazy too. I bet if you get HS 5s, a BS 3, and a 720 (or maybe even a BS 5 instead), youll get a board sponsor no problem.

LFADAM, spinning isn't much of my thing. i am sorta working on a ts bs 3 so i can maybe try dum dums this season yet. i can do hs fs/bs 3's, ts fs 3/5...i CAN spin but i normally choose not to.

wtbamoomba, i could win at a lot of contests, but i just don't go to that many. none of them are close and with gas being high, i can never go to any out of state too often. i am thinking about going to the Between the Bridges event...not totally sure yet.

Contests mean nothing.
Involvement, and sales mean everything.

Being sponored at all deffinately boosts your confidence though, and you progress much faster. Even if it's a small company. Like I said, last year I could only do 3 inverts, and 3 spins, now, i have 4 more flips, all of them grabbed now, and 4 more spins, and I'm close to a few mobes, a batwing, and a 7. And I'm positive that if I wasn't sponsored, I wouldn't push myself to get better. A REALLY small clothing company is usually the best place to start with sponsors.

I would assume getting sponsored is similar to a college application. It's nice that you can do all sorts of inverts ( or having a great GPA, SAT scores.....) but what are you going to do for the shop?
Why should they sponsor you? What do you have to offer as a human being?

From reading what's been posted above, all you're talking about is yourself. It's not just about you, it's what you can do to promote the sport, shop image and sales.

Exactly what B_Fool is saying.

Kind of hijacking here, but what exactly do regional riders for board companies get? Free setups? And pictures, contest, mags bonuses?

freee stuff yes, but what comes with that is a crap load of pressure to do good and a sense of wonder if your always doing a wonder of good for your sponsor, personally id rather just go out there for the love of wakeboarding rather than to get sponsored for the free stuff, i think all nor cal riders have it dialed down, they have there style and there love for wakeboarding, whereas your florida guys have pressure to do good just so they can keep their sponsors and houses

Sponsorships mainly include what you can do for them, which was posted above.

Some pro's aren't even sponsored. Granted, I can't name them, but they are out there..

Sponsorship isn't everything. If you get sponsored, more power to you, but if you get too much pressure to do good, drop the sponsor. Wakeboarding is about fun. I would like to get another sponsor, but I'm not gonna ruin my fun over it..
