I have a 95 Ski Nautique with the Teleflex rack and pinion steering and a tilt helm. Last year the steering was tight but manageable. This year I almost have to stand up and put my weight into it to turn the wheel. I mean I really have to muscle it. Is there some maintenance that can be performed? Lubrication? Or do I have to replace the rack and cable?
This happened to me this year too, and I did a fair amount of reading. Long story short, I read about one guy in a direct-drive boat that was able to save his old cable by packing grease into the end of the cable and having someone turn the wheel to distribute the grease over and over again for like an hour. It didn't end up like a new cable, but at least it wasn't dangerously tight anymore. Most everyone else just swaps out the cable, which is what I did. Plus, the new Teleflex cables supposedly have a Teflon coating and should make them last longer - that's what they say anyway! Between two guys it's not that hard a job.
