Im a fairly new wakeborder but if anyone is like me, you'll psych yourself out before you hit the water. What I mean is, I'll say to myself "im gonna hit the water today and try a 360...". I'll get out there and be like "ummm....maybe another day, I'll just stick to w2w for now!!"lol
How do you overcome the fear to try a new "painfull" trick??

i do the same thing, i'm like today i am going to try the backroll, but when i get out there i'm like maybe some other time. If you never try a trick that you really want to do your going to be kickin your self in the ass later saying i really wish i had tried that trick. Just dont be afraid to get hurt, its a part of life. you have do deal with pain no matter what you do.

i just started wakeboarding and have the same friken problem... so easy to Taco Bell Chalupa out... i find i usually Taco Bell Chalupa out because the thought of getting hurt is constantly on my mind.

i have this same problem when im snowboarding as well. the thing is, if you fall wakeboarding, its usually not nearly as painful as when you fall snowboarding.

it helps when you have a boat full of hot chicks or other friends that will make fun of you for being such a Taco Bell Chalupa. i find it helps me push myself. just basically gotta suck it up and giver.

Dont call it a painful trick
think of how itll look when ya nail it
and just go for it
i tried 360s a while back
decided i needed to work on hieght first
just to get a little hang time in the air
make sure you know what your doing
if you have a trampoline those are good practice

I had the HUGEST mental block on my tantrums. I was scared to throw my head back. But one day my friend was just like, "don't think about it at all." So I didn't, and just threw it and I got all the way around, and 6 tries later, I landed it. Now that's all I have to do, just not think about it when I cut out and then in.

Yea, i do that EVERY first 360 or backroll i try for the day. Then i just end up hitting the wake planning on doing a w2w 180 or something, and throw a backroll.

Always focus on your edging and pop. If you focus only on throwing your head back or starting a rotation you are done for. You'll either rotate to early and not focus on the handle pass or mess up your edging and get about a foot of pop.

It's all about having fun. If you think about getting hurt too much chances are you WILL get hurt on the trick. I'm just starting tantrums and all i think about is cutting as hard as possible and wowing the audience in the boat cause no one else has the balls to it in our towerless boat.

Of course i am out starting august 8th because of knee surgery... so don't listen to anything i say.

BUT HAVE FUN

dude i got the same problem... sounds stupid and is, but I went out and bought a new board/boots. $800 later, I am now trying inverts. I guess I just have alot of money invested into it, seems how I dont have a job. I have yet to land one, but invert falls dont hurt as much as I expected.. 3's are SO much worse, and I've heard raley are terrible.

haha er....I used to be ballsy then I "lost" a year of memory after my 2nd attempt at a 360. I would say try inverts first, they hurts lots less and look cooler.

P.S. It didn't help me that I naturally wanted to spin blindside first. So my first real attempt at any spin was a Blindside 360. (No 180s no reg 3s, nothing, not even an ollie 180)

I have re-instituted the new trick rule.
You are not allowed to get back into the boat until you try 1 new trick. It does not matter what it is, as long as it is new.
Last time we went out, one of the dudes I ride with, who had only ever landed an indy grab, tried a roast beef and hit it. He was so stoked that he immediately tried a slob grab and landed that.... his first front hand grab.

Think morbid thoughts...

"if something happens to me tomorrow and I can never wakeboard again, will I regret having never tried this (or that) trick?"

That should get you over your fears - you never know what tomorrow may bring.

motobill, that is a very good point. I'll quote Dave Matthews here. "Don't throw the day away" "Wash out this tired notion that the best is yet to come." That song really has a good message in all aspect of life. I play it almost everytime I'm in the boat and it gets stuck in my head when I'm riding so I end up trying stuff because it may be my last chance. (great effin song by the way, it's called Pig)

This is simple to overcome. I never have any fear of a wake to wake trick (now rails can be a different story Smile ).

This is the jedi mindtrick I used to use. Of course, I developed this once I was a more advanced rider, but it still can apply to all levels. When I was learning new inverts, like say a roll to revert or whatever. I would just simply break it down (like you guys should be doing anyways!!!). I would think, all it is is a back roll (which I can do) and a 180 (which I can do). I know I am going to make the flip rotation at least somewhat. I might not land in the right position, but I know I am going to land on my board, because it is a back roll trick, and I can do those. Once I learned the 8 base inverts, there was NO trick I was scared of. Since every trick starts with those 8 base inverts it was simple to get over mentally. Just do the invert, and add the rotation... Whats the worse that can happen?

OK, this is how you can apply it to some of you guys... A 360 was mentioned at the beginning of the thread, so I'll go with that. You should have your 180 down, natrually. You should have your handlepass down (from doing surface 360's behind the boat at a slower boat speed). You already know everything that goes into this trick. It is just a continuation of a 180.

I guess what I am trying to say is to learn the building blocks for each trick you want to attempt. Don't just use those building blocks to do the trick physically, but use them mentally too. Break that trick down, and realize how it works, and how you understand it, and how you can do it. Every trick can be broken down, and that is the base of how we teach things (from where I come from). Also, the trampoline is a big help with confidence.

I find once you have tried it once and it did not hurt that bad.... it is cake from there on out. Very Happy I have had a harder time with a tantrum than with trying raley's for some reason. I can actually do a back flip on the trampoline but speeding into a wake freaks me out a little. Rolling Eyes

most of the time you get hurt is cause your not going at the trick 100%. IF you think your going to eat $h!t and die you probably will. so have in your mind the right technique and have fun.
