I have a kicker 12" comp sub (older version) specs say 4 or 8 ohm, (watts peak / rms) = 300 / 150, equivalent volume = 4.50 ft3, net displacement = 104.9 in3.
I have that hooked to a power acoustik ps2-520 (2ohm stable)specs are:
2 channel, 4ohm=125x2, 2ohm=150x21ohm=300 max 520. This is in my boat. Its in a box that has about 1.8 cu. ft. of air space. Problem is when i turn it up and hit some low bass it bottoms out. Just wondering what the problem is with that. Other than that it sounds good.
Thanks.! _________________ Lets Ride!

Is the box ported or sealed? Personally i would go the the website and find the Tech manual for that sub and read through the curves, decide what kind of bass you are shooting for and build a box exactly to the volume and port length(if used) speced out from Kicker. _________________

My current box is not ported. From the website, using the 12" kicker comp. it says "equivalent air space : 4.5 ft3. Does this sound right? Isnt that a pretty big box?
Thanks _________________ Lets Ride!

That sounds huge. Should probably be in the 1 cu ft area for a sealed box. _________________

turn the volume down. that bottoming out is your cone moving (excursion) to it's max...you can only get so much out of a sub with a 150 watts. dont; expect much IMO, especially in a boat. _________________ LED Concepts |

I get the same thing sometimes on a 10w6 with a 500/1 sometimes on certain songs that hit really low notes when the volume is up too loud. Mine is in a ported box built to spec. _________________ LED Concepts |

| yeah - i remember my old kickers wanting ridiculous airspace... the obvious answer, since you're already running an undersized sealed box (which should allow it to take a little more power actually) is that the sub is just getting too much power - you're pushing it too hard... if you have the means, see about getting a second sub so you're not overworking the one... I have the same exact problem in my truck, but i've just been too cheap and lazy to deal with it, so I've had to sacrifice some of the bass I'd like to have... |
