|
|
Ive wakeboarded for 3 years
But after 50+ attempts i still cant land my backrolls
I get around everytime and 905 of the time i land outside or on the wake
BUT 95% of the time i land with to much backpull = i sit on my back and the line tension rips the line out of my hands.
Whats the problem when you always land on your ass?
I get the rotation everytime, but i always end up getting the line ripped out of my hands due to my asslandings |

Try and keep the handle in close to your hip throughout the rotation (If you are over-rotating you will need to let the handle out a bit to slow the rotation down).
If you make sure the handle is in really tight to your hip as you leave the wake and then try and keep it in as you land you will find you can hold on to the handle better. If the handle gets pulled away from you your arms will be able to extend and absorb the pull.
From what you said, I am guessing when you land your arms are almost out straight? This will always result in the handle getting ripped out your hands however you land. There will be no give in your arms and the only way for the handle to go when it is pulled is out of your hands.
I hope this makes sense?
As for landing on your ass, Try and keep your legs a bit straighter once you have spotted your landing. It sounds like you are landing almost crunched up in a ball. You should land leaning away from the boat slightly so you don't get pulled out the front, it sounds like you are doing this but just need your legs a bit straighter.
I have made some assumptions about your backroll in oredr to provide this advise. If they are wrong let me know or try and post a video if it is possible. |

Hi rocket..
First of all, ive read all your post, and appreciate them very much.
Overlake's post could aswell have been mine. Except for the fact that my problem comes in before the handle gets ripped from me. i take of fine 90 degrees on edge, good height.
My main problem is landing leaning away from the rope with the board almost 90 degrees to the boat. Everyones telling me that its there the next time but after 50+ i keep landing the same way (half board/ half ass). some say keep the rope in, some say straighten the legs and some say shoot the board more away from board... Can you elaborate any more ? .. or should i just try 50 more ? will post a vid tonight.. |

Wakejunkie04, sorry dude, I don't quite understand.
Do you mean that you are landing with the board totallty on edge (90 degrees) showing the graphics on the bottom to the boat? And your ass in the water in an almost seated position?
If you can post a vid tonight I will take a look and try and provide you with some advice. Sorry I'm not of much help at the moment but if you have another go at explainig the ploblem I'll have a go at commenting.
Sorry again. |

Well hello again... Ive got a vid now, poor quality - but i hope that you can get a picture of what i might be doing wrong.
another question: I have read your post on "getting pop".. and i really want to know if the edge i use for this roll is close to the one that would be needed for a correct pop on a regular w2w jump ? i am almost 80 degrees on the wake here.. should i be 45 instead.. because i cant seem to get enough edge/pop with the 45 degrees angle.
Thanks in advance

Wakejunkie04, Your edging is good, you stay quite well on edge (flatten off a bit but not too bad). For a regular W2W I would cut further out from the boat but for learning backrolls you were out about the right distance. When you hit the wake you should be as near as possible to 90 degrees and definately NOT 45 degrees.
When you leave the wake you are throwing the board out behind you rather than up over the top. Think of it like a loop the loop and try and send the board straight up rather than round. Look up over your lead shoulder as you take off
, this will get the rotation going and get it going in the right direction.
You also let go of the handle with one hand quite early. (Some people do this and do find it makes landing steadier) I would suggest when learning you hold the handle with both hands all the way through until you hit the water. Holding the handle with both hands and keeping the handle in tight will get your body in the right position and keep the rotation going in the right direction.
I hope this makes sense but if not let me know. It is a bit rushed as I have to go out and haven't had chance to read it back. |

| Concentrate more on a progressive edge. You are flying in pretty hard at the wake. |

Thanks guys... tried a couple more today, same problem and id really like if you wouldnt mind to explain some more - im black and blue all over and really want to stick this one
Regarding the backroll:
To sum up,
Rocket - you tell me to let the board go more over my head, and ill do this by looking more UP over my left shoulder instead of just turning my head left ?
To keep BOTH hands on the handle all the way through and in tight.
jpminter - can you tell me some more, im not very far from the wake and yet you say im flying into it.. should i start closer to the wake ? you mean get more pop ?
Regarding regular w2w jump:
Rocket - I should use the same edge technic - but start farther out you say ?
so always try to hit the wake at 90 degrees and keep the handle tight !?
Thanks! |

| Wakejunkie04, that looks more like a mexican backroll than a progressive backroll. |

ok man, that is the EXACT same thing i was doing when learing backrolls.
i mena the same thing.
i tried it so many times that i could land it like that. finalkly someone told me i was doing a mexi roll.
the problem is you have to hit the damn wake at a 90 degree angel. and this angle need to be achieved right at the wake, not from the first start of your cut. like they said progresively.
just start your normal prog cut, but just as you hit the wake. point your nose of the board at the wake, and look over your leading shoulder,
i swear man i landed with my butt on the water and had the handle ripped from my hand so many times i know exactly what your talking about.
just try and get that nose pointed at the wake this time. _________________ if it looks like i fell hard that was on purpose.
