Wow I just saw the Welcome dvd and saw radar lake. What an awesome idea, that seems like such a nice place to ride. I was wondering if anyone knew some stuff about it. Like who owns it? and who built it? Is it a private lake or can other people go ride on it? I also saw a big house in the background, does anyone live there? or is it just a place for people to stay when they are there? Seems so awesome, I was trying to think how much it would cost to build a lake like that, I would imagine it would be a ton. Seems like a way cool idea though.

Radar Lake is owned by the O'Brien family, the O'Briens also started the company Hyperlite. But the O'Brien(s) of Hyperlite now are starting Radar Wakeboards. So you probbaly wont see any more hyperlite vids there..

someone correct me if im wrong

im sure people could rent out/use the lake for video shoots. pre pop was filmed there, and that wasnt a hyperlite video.

but yeah, its private and owned by the Obriens.

Depending on the approach into Seatac, and the visibilty that day, you can actually see radar lake, it's pretty damn big, not to mention the unique shape..

$500,000 Cost of Land (at least 20 acres, $25,000 per acre)
$200,000 Engineering and Permits (depends on state, MI about $200,000)
$300,000 Excavation of 300,000 yards at $1 per yard (depends on area)
????????? Utilities (if any required)
????????? Roads and access
????????? If you need a well for water
????????? Maintenance for first 3 years, the most intensive period of time

Figure starting about $1,000,000 for most people looking to do this from scratch. I am selling lots for $300,000 on the lake. Obviously a lot cheaper if you buy a a group. Add to this a boat launch ramp, a home, lake insurance, etc.

I have seen a few stories of people digging a lake for about $50,000. They already owned the land and had the machinery to dig it in house. The $50k was for fuel and miscl expenses - not machinery, wages, permits, etc.

From what I have heard Herb bought that property in the 70's when the Obrien's owned O'Brien ski's. The dredged it and used it for personal use only having ski contests every so often.
After Herb started H.O. they used it for research and development with H.O. ski's.
Then giving way to wakeboarding it is now more known for wakeboarding than skiing. Even though it has seen more years under a ski than a board. It is called O'Brien Lake or Lake O'Brien I can not recall. They called it Radar because they wanted to keep the location private. HUH guess that was way before google earth?

They called it Radar lake because it was sold to the owner of Radar Electric when times were Uhhhh Errrh a little rough for the Obriens. They ( the Obriens ) bought the lake back but the lake kept it's name from the previous owner.
