I'm noticing that theres a big difference between what people are calling backrolls in the video section. Some keep a tall, locked stance, and the handle at their hips, doing a full reverse cartwheel; while others seem to get their bodies parrallel to the water like an off-axis three-sixty, with arms outstreched, throwing the hadle around their head. I know the first is the true backroll, but is it easier to learn by doing the second? I'm going for my first roll this weekend; all you who have already landed yours: please give any advice. Thanx!

I dont know about the difference between those you asked, but I am also going to try the backroll for the 1st time this weekend!

The advice Ive been given is, keep your progressive edge all through the wake, stand tall and look in the direction of your lead shoulder while keeping the handle close to your lead hip. All of these should make you rotate. It seems impossible, but I am going to try it!

Let me know how it goes for you, Ill let you know how it goes for me,

I think you may be referring to the backroll attempt that I posted:

I was actually attempting to do this> "tall, locked stance, and the handle at their hips, doing a full reverse cartwheel", but the best I could do was this> "while others seem to get their bodies parrallel to the water like an off-axis three-sixty, with arms outstreched, throwing the hadle around their head"
Can't comment on which way's easier. I just followed my coach's instructions the best I could and the rest came "naturally" Laughing
Good luck! I hope yours turns out better than mine! Laughing

Good luck guys. Tried my first backrolls last week and now can't do much of anything for probably a few weeks. Think I tore a muscle in my rib cage.

Buergday, You really get a concussion off of that?

I once was just trying to do a wake to wake and literally did a cartwheel on the water, (yes, before i went under lol) Was dizzy for about 30 minutes.

Buergday, that is true backroll, well kinda. I'm not sure I know what you're talkin about when you said the whole moving the handle around your head thing. Anyways here's 2 clips of my closest attemps. Actually I had a closer attempt where I landed and then the board slid from under me.

Oh and criswb, it seems impossible at first. The first few times I through it, it was a nasty seen. But progressively I kept getting more and more of the rotation down. Don't let the 1st falls keep ya down. It really doesn't even hurt that much to fall except in the nuts. (don't kill me for making the assumption) but if your avitar is you it doesnt look like you'll be having that problem.

man i feel ya bro, i worked on that trick at the end of last summer and started back trying the first of this year.

last year it seemed i was always layed out flat and landing on my back. but i think that was from starting my rotation before i reached the top of the wake.

this year i started taking my cut father and father in. finally i got a good rotation and landed back on my board. it didnt stick it but got real close.

the next try I stuck it. letting go with my back hand seemed to help straighten me out and slow the rotation. the next day i landed 12 of them. so just stick with it. everytime youll get closer and closer

i always take a short cut (i believe it makes it more progressive), and it really helps for the rotation, i find it makes me feel more controlled. i also keep me elbows in a bit, that helps with control too.
but don't listen to me, my backrolls are ugly and mexi Very Happy

one is a backroll (reverse cartwheel) and one is a mexican-aka half @$$- backroll. hope this helps. mexicans are easier but not as rewarding.
