And already having problems. Towing my brother when the boat started to lose power and hiccup, it then stopped altogether. Shut off the engine and tried to start it again but it wouldnt turn over. Put it in neutral and gave it some gas and it started but ran real rough, like a cylinder misfiring, so I shut it off and got towed back. Mechanic supposed to look at it today but I am not sure if thats going to happen or not.

The shop that sold us the boat towed us in and said "Mastercraft is having all sorts of problems this year." THanks jackass. Sad

Just got to 50 hours on our 06 X2. The only incident so far was a loose fuel hose that they caught during the 10 hour service. Otherwise it's been great.

WTF indeed, seriously man. You don't seem to have much of an idea what you're talking about so you might just kinda want to chill back and not muddle people's threads with misinformation.

If something got loose inside the motor it most likely would result in a catostrophic failure. That is hands down the most random answer I've ever heard. period. My guess is that it's the ECU going into limp mode, or the ECU shorting out. Sounds like his MC dealership will get to the bottom of it anyways.

You might not want to mention that you were towing someone to the dealer. Not sure what engine you have but Mercruiser says not quick starts and no high speed runs during break in and with 4.5 hours on the engine, it is not broken in.

I highly doubt it is going into limp mode. It would not feel like a cylinder was misfiring if it did.

PUlling someone at 4.5 hours really isnt that good. You want to very the RPM's a good amound and not staying at the same RPM for long periods of time. You are also suppose to very the RPM's so the rings set well thus creating the peak potential for the motor. I would wate till atleast 10 hours to give a pull

I understand about seating the rings properly, but even if I wasnt following the break-in procedure to a "T" then it shouldnt be anything major. A new engine shouldnt being throwing a rod after 4.5 hours of use, know what I am saying?

Even if it is that, which I am not sure, I will find out this week.

Sounds like a fuel pump/filter issue.

Heard of it happening on alot of Indmar's.

the first 10 hours on an engine are by far the most important, but hey, do what you want

Yea maybe on a two stroke sled but not on a 65k boat. The 2 stroke break in mentality of mine is let her rip but not with the high perf boat motor

Update on our problem with the boat, I guess it just ran out of gas, lol, but the gauge read full.

"The fuel pump was fried because the gas tank was run dry (I suspect that the fuel pump may have been OK). The gas gauge read full but the tank was empty. They put a new sending unit in the tank and it seems to be working OK."

4.5 hours on a boat is plenty to start towing people around. We have a 1989 Ski Supreme that we bought brand new and broke it in by pulling skiiers around. The boat has 1200 hours on it now and runs like it is brand new. I guess thats just how good Ski Supremes are. Chrysler power baby.

I've owned 4 Nautis and not one of the dealers has ever told me not to tow at less than 10 hours - or that the boat needed service in less than 25 - and I've never had a problem with any of them....

i've rarely seen a topic create as much controversy as "break in"... (other than which boat is best)... it seems the die-hard engine builders are usually the ones who "drive it like they stole it", and people who've heard from people who've heard from people who say that they should drive really easy... of course you need to vary speed (he didn't say if the person he was towing was any good - who knows, maybe he was getting lots of good starts & stops Laughing) - here's the basics - drive it too easy, you risk missing the chance to seat everything because the hone is gone too soon and the cylinder is glazed. Drive too hard, and there's a chance of glazing the walls too soon, again resulting in poor seating. A good balance is needed... but for the most part, just avoid running at high RPM's too soon - get some good punches in to higher RPM's, vary the speed well, and you'll be fine. Just make sure you warm it up correctly first - that can do more damage than anything when the engine's new.

Running out of fuel can burn out the fuel pump in a very short time. As long as they calibrated your fuel sending unit you'll be fine. In an X-30 you can see the tank if you take out the small cooler in the back, so you can always do a visual inspection anyways.

This is what happened: Boat was delivered with the gas tank reading Full. My dad assumed that they dealer filled up the tank before delivery (which they should). I got on the boat at 3 hours, saw that the gauge was full. Ran the boat for an hour and half which is when it ran out of gas, with the gauge still reading full.

Therefore we believe the dealer did not fill up the tank, or whether they only put a little in or what. Its a mystery man.

Exactly. I am going to stop by the dealer tomorrow and ask them if they filled the tank or not. Which I know they didn't, just want to hear there explanation.

gmarkham1, I am n00b when it comes to boats, I dont deliver them I dont prep them, the dealer does. Therefore the dealer should have checked everything over before delivery, if the boat came with a gas gauge reading full then why would they put any gas in it at all? And if it did read full wouldnt they think it was strange that mastercraft filled up the gas tank at the factory? I dont know man, but I am going to find out.

Same symptoms happened to my malibu when we first got it. We overheated the engine, and toasted 4 of the 8 cylinders. It might also be spark plugs.

I hope all you potential boat buyers out there get the real message of this thread, FIND A DEALER YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY TRUST! I know everybody makes mistakes, but it seems like 99% of the time the dealers in these situations could have avoided a lot of headaches by doing a thourough inspection of their boats. The time has come for dealers to step up!
