I currently have 2 JL W3's and was going to push them with a PPI 1500. Is this plenty of power for 2 dual voice coil subs or should I just get a single w7? Maybe one w3 will be enough if boxed and ported right?

I would go with a single 12w7 if I were you. That is what I have and I love it. I am pushing it with a JL 500.1 amp and it sounds good but with a little more power would be even better.

I think that the 12w7 has a greater power requirement than 2 12w3's but your PPI amp should be more than enough for either setup.

I am in the north Dallas area also so if you would like to hear mine I would be more than happy to show it to you.

Be careful with the w7 it requires a lot more air space to maximize the sound. If your planning on installing the sub under the drivers side storage area I would run a single w3 with a perfectly tuned box. Don't get me wrong, w7's are amazing subs but putting it in a 2 cubic foot box won't sound much better then a single w3 in the same space.

Box volume (size) reccomendations from JL's website:

12w7 sealed 1.375 cubic feet
12w7 ported 1.75 cubic feet

12w3 sealed 1.25 cubic feet
12w3 ported 1.75 cubic feet

Wow no sh*t? That's tiny for such a powerful sub... ok go with the w7 then Smile you should have plenty of room if you're creative.

screw it I am gonna try the w3's that I have now and then upgrade if I don't like it. I just need to know how to wire the two subs and their dual voice coils now. Anyone?

Here is a chart that you can use to determine how to wire your speakers based on the speaker ohms and what load you would like the amp to have. I would think that your amp would be stable to 1 ohm but I am not sure.

Thanks mikel, That is exactly what I needed! What are the advantages & disadvantages to each type of wiring? parallel vs. series just lowering the ohm load?
