I just saw the movie "Four Feathers." It started me researching the Sudan. Here is a headline from cnn from March of last year:

The Bush administration has formed a special commission to recommend steps for abolishing slavery in Sudan, the U.S. State Department said Monday.

I did some more research. It appears that there is still actual SLAVERY in Sudan. I mean like people can buy other people. There is a civil war going on, and the atricities are beyond description. I'm talking like people being crucified and having limbs cut off for minor infractions of muslim law.

If we went into Iraq to save the people from Saddam, I think we should go into the Sudan to save those people. Actual SLAVES. Holy crap. They circumcise WOMEN there. Things sound so much worse there than they were in Iraq.
If you do a google search under "sudan human rights" so much horrible crap comes up, it's unbelievable.

Part of why we invaded IRAQ was to save the people and part was because IRAQ posed a risk to our security (remote as it was). Since Sudan doesn't pose a risk to us it is more difficult to get involved. Many U.S. citizen's wouldn't want to risk the lives of our military or the cost to save people in other countries that don't pose any risk to us. I feel that we should help and at least eliminate slavery, but then we get yelled at for pushing our crazy "western" anti-slavery views...

They cut off the clitoris.

So then I guess we don't do anything unless we are threatened. Leggester, what I am saying is, that even though I disagree with getting involved at all, if we are going to have a policy of getting involved to help out other people who are opressed, why not go all the way? But I guess Otto had a good point, and that is that the Sudan isn't a threat to us.

Ok, some more on the Sudan:

Identified in 1997 by the US State department as "sponsor of terrorism and a relentless oppressor of its minority Christian population."

"In August 1998, the attention of Congress was again drawn to the economic sanctions placed on Sudan, due to an alleged relation of suspected terrorist financier, Osama bin Laden, to many Sudanese companies - including the Gum Arabic Company, one of the leading exporters of gum in Sudan. However, most US companies claim that if there is indeed a relationship between Sudanese gum arabic exporters and Mr. bin Laden, they will cease all trade relations with those companies. "

The US alone imports 4,000 to 5,000 tons of gum arabic from Sudan, approximately US$9 million a year. From the US census website, in Jan and Feb of 2003, the US did 4.7 million dollars worth of trade with the Sudan.

Why are we trading with a country who has a horrible record of attrocities, and suspected terrorist links? Why aren't they in the "Axis of Evil."

Wait, now I'm uncovering stuff that says that the Sudan is cooperating with the US. Bin Laden lived there in the late 90's, and had terrorist camps there. After 9/11, Sudan kicked them out and started cooperating with the US. So I guess we won't get involved.

In May of 2001, the president said that Sudan was a "disaster for all human rights" and promised to "speak and act for as long as persecution and atrocities in Sudan last."

Then 9/11 happened, and Sudan panicked, and said they would cooperate with us to get rid of the terrorists. In exchange, it seems, we don't say anything about their civil war or war crimes against civilians.

As much as this makes me sick, I don't see what else we can do. I'm not for involvement in other nation's affairs. But this sucks.

Not to steal the post or anything, but a couple people asked about female circumsicion:
There are different degrees to it, and I'm not sure how much detail I can get into on this post with out it being deleted. But in some cultures, it only goes as far as cutting the "hood" of the clitorus off, thus exposing the clitorus (not any different than a guys circumcision). Other forms include cutting the whole clitorus off, or actually cutting out the whole vulva. I'm going to stop right there and hope this doesn't get deleted (sorry Pat if its too graphic right there). Its a very interesting topic, look it up on the internet, and you'll find out. Some of it is very gruesom and painful, many women die. The most extreme form (done buy some Muslims) is horrendous, but remember, its from out point of view.

Wakeboy551 pretty much hit home on the Female Circ.
It does involve excising the entire clitoris and vulva...... Shocked
The area is sewn up and a tiny hole is left for urinating. Very, very gruesome thing to do to females.
Was involved in a surgical case the other day that was similar to that only because it involved cancer. Sad

We talked about female circ. in a cultural anthro. class. I was seriously disturbed by that lecture. It bothers me that people in this world still practice things like that.

I was looking it up because I like history and I watch to watch movies based on a historical event, and then research the real history and its effects on the present. This led me to the Sudan, as the movie Four Feathers takes place during British military involvment there at the end of the 1800's

I find it funny and ironic that Crissy would post on the subject of slavery when her avatar is the Confederate flag.
