I've read some articles on how to do backroll and they always talked about "getting the board up and behind you" while poping the wake. I don't really understand what's the meaning of getting the board behind you. Is it almost like an Air-raley kicking the board behind you while leaving the wake? But I don't see the resemblance of the two. Can someone please explain it to me?

I'M WITH YOU, I DONT SEE ANYTHING IN COMMON WITH A RALEY EITHER. I JUST STARTED TRYING THE BACK ROLL THIS PAST WEEK AND CAN GET AROUND BUT DON'T HAVE THE HEIGHT NEEDED TO LAND IT. I NEED TO WORK ON PRO. EDGE AND LOADING THE LINE APARENTLY. THE WAY I GET AROUND IS PRETTY SIMPLE, NOT SURE IF CORRECT BUT WORKED FOR ME, I RIDE REGULAR, TRY AND POP LIKE FOR WAKE JUMP AND AS I'M COMING THROUGH THE TOP OF THE WAKE, LOOK OVER MY LEFT SHOULDER AND THROW MY HIPS IN THAT DIRECTION. HOPE IT HELPS

YOU DONT NEED TO YELL

Laughing

WHY ARE WE YELLING

LOUD NOISES

ok anyway...i havent landed a backroll yet but i believe it is easier to rotate when you let the board fall behind you...and a raley that is done correctly has an arched back...the board above the head...and arms out straight...wheras a backroll has a straight back, board behind the rider, and arms into the hips...

someone correct me if im wrong Cool

Catch This Wake, Your problem is that you are not spinning fast enough - you get started fine - and then it looks like you let the rope way out which will slow you down. Keep the edge like you have, but focus on keeping the handle in tight and close to your hips - you are letting it out and up (at least from what I can tell). If you keep it in close it will speed your rotation up.

Remember - keeping the handle in close will make you spin fast, letting it out will slow you down...When you get the hang of the rotation - you will be able to rotate it using this method at all times, and you will be able to visualize it slow and adjust as needed in the air.

Hope this helps.

The statement about getting the board behind you comes down to your progressive edge into the wake. One way to look at is this: When you are progressively edging into the wake, try to imagine you are cutting away from the boat. Hold this edge through the pop off the wake. Keep the handle in close and look up to the sky and towards your lead shoulder. And always remeber to try to land the same way you took off. When you come around and spot the water, you are going to try to land on your heelside edge and be cutting away again.

The reason people say to get the board behind you is to prevent you from doing a mexican or a what some people call a Heelside Frontroll. Where you cut into the wake, flatten off your edge, and throw you head down like a front toeside frontroll.

Hopefully this helps alittle.

Also, Catch This Wake,

Garveyj had some good advice on using the handle to control your speed. You should work alittle more on your progressive edge. Start with a slower outside turn, let the board roll onto its edge and then as you approach the wake build your speed. If you crank a hard cut into the wake, then let off at the wake, you will flatten off your board, and losing balance and control on the handle on a backroll. This is part of what is causing the handle to get away from you.

alot of people put to much thought into a backroll
it's one of the most basic inverts but can be super clean
a few things to rember
-hold your edge through the wake
-stay tucked
-and spot your landing

Catch This Wake,
Nice improvement. You should have this trick anytime now. Take alittle more cut in, stand taller at the wake for more pop.

Have you been working on 180's both heelside and toeside yet?

Having your strongest edge at the top of the wake is what will get you the pop for the backroll (as well as throw you ass over tea kettle), just keep trying, and once you land one you'll get the whole point that people are trying to make with edging and getting the board up and away.

On the 3's, stop trying to throw them wake to wake; it will make the whole spinning thing easier if you learn to throw them off double up rollers - not the actuall double up, but just the rollers the boat hits on it's way back around. Learn the movement/handle pass of the 3 by trying to throw the 3 off of those (you might even benefit from doing ollie 3's to teach you to use the rope) because you aren't pulling to rotate, you try to throw it off the wake, and thus, off-axis to faceplant.

Just my .02, but from watching your vid it will definately contribute to your riding.

I don't know how far back you ride, but it looks like it's about 75ft. Try to ride closer to the boat (i.e. 65ft) to get you more vertical pop to practice the tricks.

But I might just be ignant, and you aren't actually that far back from the boat Very Happy (hard to tell from the vid)

I would start working on the toeside 180's and work towards a toeside 3. Wrapped heelside 3s can be a bit tricky to get down.

A toeside 3 comes around pretty easy if you have a nice late toeside 180. And you can land a few without the handle pass without killing yourself til you learn it.

Catch This Wake, WOW - you have improved a ton - you have the board under you, just need to stick it - hold on tight - maybe get a little more speed coming into the wake so that you land on the downside of the wake instead of on top of it....That way it will be a little softer and maybe not force the handle out of your hand.

Get a video up here showing the results - I am stoked to see you land AND ride away from your first one!!!
