|
|
Are Fuel Pump Failures very common? I was having a great day out riding and all of a sudden the engine just dies so I think to myself is there gas look at the gauge half a tank. so I pull up the back seat look at the tank looks like half a tank. So I row the fricken boat for an hour to get to a launch and start looking around and the fuel pump is dead. Just wondering if this is a spare part I should keep on the boat? Anybody else with fuel pump failure stories? _________________ Got Spelling? |

| I don't think it's very common. although I had that happen to me last year. But I could tell it was starting to go out because every now and then the boat would stall like it was starving for fuel then after a while it died! I ended up fixing it myself as it is very simple to replace. Price for the fuel pump was something like $230 though. However I have lots of hours on the boat. Also my friend had the same problem on his boat but didn't have as many hours on it. |

| Is there some type of computer port on these new motors to check for problems....98 vortec 4.3L mercruiser, as posted earlier mine cuts out some, but it could be a number of things.....how can I narrow it down, without just replacing stuff...which runs into a ton of $$$. - or just take it to a dealer..... |

The computer should check the fuel pressue in the fuel rail, but I think it has to drop for awhile to register. You going to have to catch it in the act, or just change the part you think is the most likely cause, which I would say is the fuel pump. If you found a place with a good part return policy you could try it and see if it works. Some places will let you return a part if you don't use it, so you could get a spare fuel pump just incase the one on your boat fails completely.

| Autozone has a good return policy....so I guess I could try a chevy fuel pump, then take it back if it doesn't fix the problem.....98 4.3L vortec....auto parts should work with it? |

I don't know, most cars/trucks have the fuel pump located in the tank, this hasn't been the case with the boats I've seen. Is your fuel pump in the tank?

I have an old 1988 MC Prostar 190 big block, and fuel system problems are rampant. At one point we were using the gasoline IV system (me driving while my friend constantly drips gas directly into the carburetor (sp?)). Very safe considering we had no fire extinguisher.
But anyway, back to the point, I had the fuel system cleaned out, new filter, and a new anti-siphon valve. It seemed to do the trick, but I still have some problems similar to what you described. What I do is take it out of gear, rev it up real good for about a minute, and after that I'm golden for another hour or two.
nice pic riverfreak, now I'm all wigged out. |

Update today it was not a fuel pump failure it was the fuel pump relay that went out. _________________ Got Spelling? |

| JD, sorry to throw in my fuel pump misery in your post, did you take it to the shop or try and fix it yourself? I'm taking mine in this week, I hated to because it may take a couple of weeks to get it back, but I could see running into a lot of $$$ trying to fix it ourself.....I hope mine is as simple as yours..... |
